And the significance therefore is to take the awareness and the resources that have been provided and the awareness that's been created after tsunami and leverage that up into a major initiative to protect, conserve and effectively manage our coastlines better, in a way that for the future will one, mitigate against a future tsunami and two, assist the livelihood improvement of people now."
36. Pan from boat to mangrove forest at sunset
Protecting the mangrove forests along Thailand's coast is a cause which was once the preserve of environmentalists.
But after the devastation caused by the 2004 tsunami, governments are now beginning to view the protection of the mangroves as a key coastal defence.
For much of his life, Viroj Dedsongprak paid little attention to the mangrove forests that surrounded his village.
He thought nothing of it when neighbours chopped down trees for firewood or ploughed them under for shrimp ponds.
Then came the 2004 tsunami.
Viroj's village was largely spared, while more exposed communities nearby were devastated.
The fisherman credits the spidery network of mangrove trees, nipa palms and malaleucas for saving his home, and is now doing what he can to preserve his region's biodiversity.
Viroj says it was only after the tsunami that he realised how important mangroves are.
Conservationists say Viroj's newfound enthusiasm is catching on in many Indian Ocean communities hit by the December 2004 tsunami, which killed more than 216,000 people and levelled hundreds of fishing villages.
Viroj is among nearly 40 people from three villages taking part in a World Conservation programme to plant up to 10,000 nipa palm and mangrove seedlings on an abandoned charcoal kiln.
Viroj says he believes that planting more mangroves will also improve fishing stocks.
Environmentalists say the tsunami has prompted many governments to reconsider how they manage their coastal ecosystems, with many looking to strike a balance between development and preservation.
Officials say involving coastal communities is key, not only because they depend on the ecosystem for fishing and crabbing, but also because they will determine whether a project succeeds.
Sompoch Nimsantijareon, a lecturer at Ranong province Coastal Resources Research station at Kasetsart University, has tried to raise awareness in the communities and make them understand the importance of mangrove forests.
He has set up a mangrove plantation nursery at the university to provide seedlings to fishermen and farmers.
The IUCN (World Conservation Union) has set up a team working on a US$240,000 Spanish-funded project to restore mangrove forests in Thailand and Sri Lanka.
It has teamed up with the United Nations Development Program to launch the biggest programme yet for mangrove conservation in Asia - a five-year project to fund ecosystem restoration and sustainable development in 10 countries affected by the tsunami.
The two agencies estimate it will cost US$62 million.
The program, called 'Mangroves for the Future', will help governments to recover coastal areas that scientists credit with providing crucial protection from storms, along with important nurseries for fish and habitat for birds, reptiles and mammals.
Aban Marker Kabraji, Asian regional director of IUCN, believes attention is being given to the mangroves because governments now realise they might reduce the impact of a future tsunami.
Within weeks of the tsunami many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) began planting mangroves.
Most died because there was not enough local knowledge about their care.
Since then, conservation groups have stepped in to provide expertise, and launched a number of programs in India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Such projects may well help protect Viroj and his colleagues from any future tsunami disaster.
Note: Mangroves are woody trees or shrubs that grow in coastal
