I think our hope is to try to stabilise it and then to return sovereignty and control to Iraqis. I think that was from the very beginning. The Holy Father was very clear, that he did not think the war was a good idea, the church in the United States, I was on television many times saying the war wasn't a good idea, but the President moved in that direction presuming that he had good reasons to do it, I guess, and it was good that the war was over quickly. But somehow they never planned the aftermath of the war, and that is the thing which is creating so much pain, and so much violence and so much concern for the world. Sign outside North American College\u003cbr/\u003eA prominent American Cardinal criticised the US government on Tuesday for not planning for the \"aftermath\" of the war in Iraq, and said the situation is creating \"pain\" and \"concern\" throughout the world.\u003cbr/\u003eCardinal Theodore McCarrick, the Archbishop of Washington, made the comments during an interview with the Associated Press in Rome.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCarrick is in Rome for a periodic visit all bishops make every five years.\u003cbr/\u003eHe made his comments on Iraq during an interview at North American College, the American Seminary in Rome perched on a hill above the Vatican.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCarrick's comments came the day after he met with Pope John Paul II, who vigorously opposed the war in Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Cardinal said he had always argued that the war was \"not a good idea\" and said the sovereignty and control needs to be returned to the Iraqis.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCarrick's another topic, McCarrick said that he is \"not comfortable\" with denying communion to Catholic politicians who publicly disagree with the church on issues like abortion. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also Kerry publicly supported abortion rights, American Catholics started a new debate on sanctions for Catholic politicians who publicly\u003cbr/\u003e disagree with church teachings on issues. talks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Democratic nominee for president of the United States, a Catholic whose first marriage was annulled, recently received communion during Sunday Mass in Boston, provoking more criticism from American Catholics.\u003cbr/\u003eCardinal McCarrick heads the task force examining whether there should be church sanctions for Catholic politicians who support abortion rights. \u003cbr/\u003eThe seven-member task force, created last year by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, is examining what steps it might take against Catholic politicians who vote and support positions at odds with church teachings.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday a top Vatican cardinal said priests must deny Communion to Catholic politicians who support abortion rights.\u003cbr/\u003eUS bishops have discretion in deciding who should receive Communion, but the cardinal's comments could have put more pressure on them to exclude Catholic politicians whose positions are at odds with church teachings.\u003cbr/\u003eKerry says he personally opposes abortion but supports a woman's right to choose. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong American Catholics, 56 percent of non-Hispanic Catholics and 59 percent
