It is for my own well-being but also for the well-being of the whole of Casamance.\" says Amidou Djame.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers, such as seven-year-old Inou Sa, hope the trees will bring back the fish. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I am planting trees because if I do that, the fish will come back here and I will be able again to fish here.\u003cbr/\u003eMangroves are beneficial because they protect coastal areas from erosion and their root systems are efficient at slowing down storm surges caused by hurricanes. \u003cbr/\u003eWithout mangroves, the land has no natural barrier against salt water and crops cannot grow. \u003cbr/\u003eThe villagers are part of a major effort to replant mangroves in the coastal region started by the non-governmental organisation Oceanium in 2006.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe programme is being funded by French food company Danone, which uses the investment to offset its carbon footprint. \u003cbr/\u003eBy 2009 more than 70,000 volunteers from local villages were planting mangrove seeds for Oceanium. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, the volunteers planted more than 30 million mangrove seeds. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, they are trying for their biggest challenge yet: to plant 100 million seeds by the end of the rainy season, which runs from June to October in the country's south.  \u003cbr/\u003eOceanium's founder, Haidar El Ali, has been working with the delta ecosystem for the last 17 years. \u003cbr/\u003eEl Ali visits Casamance during the rainy season. \u003cbr/\u003eHe works to spread awareness and to encourage villagers to plant mangrove trees. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The people living in the forests and villages have no assistance. They live on their own natural resources. With their fields, plantations. When we provide them with an awareness campaign, they move and plant a lot. But everything depends on the campaign,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eOceanium also works to retrieve abandoned fishing nets on the sea floor, which are dangerous to marine life. \u003cbr/\u003eEl Ali also works with women and youth organisations in the area. Many villagers come to hear him speak.
