Mid shot of surgical equipment in the foreground as doctors perform surgery in background\u003cbr/\u003eThis year has already become the deadliest of the Afghan war for international troops, surpassing last year's total of 504 deaths.\u003cbr/\u003eArmy medical evacuation units and hospitals are playing an increasingly vital role - both in saving soldiers lives and in the battle for Afghan hearts, by helping injured civilians. \u003cbr/\u003eThe emergency call has come in and the medics are preparing to set off.\u003cbr/\u003eHere in Afghanistan emergency transport comes from the sky, usually in the shape of a United States Army Blackhawk helicopter.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Charlie Company of the 6th Battalion, 101st Aviation Brigade. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a Category Alpha call - for the most serious injuries - the team has just 15 minutes to get in the air.\u003cbr/\u003eThe goal: to get the injured person to medical care within what trauma experts call the golden hour, when the chance of survival is highest.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time the medevac team has been called to transport an injured civilian.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 20-year-old Afghan woman has a skull fracture and a broken leg and arm. She is travelling with her young child, who has facial lacerations and her grandparents, who act as an escort.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medics are unsure how she was hurt, but suspect she was in a car accident, or a vehicle that hit a roadside bomb.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the cramped confines of the helicopter, Staff Sergeant Andrew Harding uses his 14 years of experience as a medic to keep the injured alive until they can get to a hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eHarding says that saving lives is very rewarding, but when a patient dies it can be very disheartening.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's an awesome feeling when you can scoop them up from the roadside when they are blown up and save their life, keep them alive, until (we) can get to a higher echelon of care, but unfortunately for every 10 saves you make, you lose one person and that's what you dwell on, the guys you lost, not the guys you save.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBased at Forward Operating Base Wolverine, in Zabul Province in Afghanistan's south, his unit has flown more than 100 missions since arriving here in March.\u003cbr/\u003eMedevac units play a crucial role in this war, providing emergency care and transportation to injured soldiers, and to Afghan civilians.\u003cbr/\u003eMajor Russ Hiedel is an executive officer here at Wolverine.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the military hopes that, by providing advanced medical care in this remote part of the country, it will help win support from the population.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The purpose of the mission is to protect the population and build the capacity. I believe that proving those services, it shows good faith and intentions and it's just the right thing to do in most cases, is to provide those services.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere are few hospitals in this region, and the sick or injured would need to travel long distances over bomb-riddled roads to reach care.\u003cbr/\u003eThe war in Afghanistan is entering its 9th year, and thousands of soldiers and civilians have lost their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eTo help save lives, NATO forces have built one of Afghanistan's most advanced hospitals, just minutes away by helicopter from the region's hottest conflict spots.\u003cbr/\u003eStaff in the trauma room wait for their next patient.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt's not long before a three-year-old Afghan boy's crying fills the hospital's emergency room. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trauma team rushes to their positions, quickly hooking monitors and other equipment to check the boy's vital signs.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is lucky to be alive after stepping on a land mine outside his village. His 10-year-old brother died.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a familiar story for the staff of this military hospital on Kandahar Airfield, in Afghanistan's south.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. Navy Commander Michael Danenberg is a doctor specialising in emergency medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eHe estimates 20 to 30 percent of his patients are under the age of 12, and most have severe injuries.\u003cbr/\u003eDanenberg says that being able to treat the injured quickly is important and rewarding. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is why I signed up with the Navy. I've been doing Navy emergency medicine for 19 years now. To me this has been the most fulfilling aspect of my 19-year career so far, the fact that I know I am doing it as close to the time of injury, in a combat zone, and being able to go from there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe NATO hospital serves not only international coalition troops and the Afghan military, it also cares for the citizens of this impoverished, war-torn nation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe building has the latest medical equipment. \u003cbr/\u003eA huge air-conditioning system blocks out the summer heat, and helps keep the hospital quiet and clean. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors and nurses monitor the patients - officials say having an advanced medical facility so close to the front lines saves lives.\u003cbr/\u003eCaptain Darin Via, of the US Navy is a commanding officer of the hospital. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Military medicine has learned over time that the closer we can treat any casualty to the combat setting, the potential of returning them to their unit is that much greater. So obviously the extreme trauma casualties, the (medical) capability closer to the combatants saves their lives.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis hospital can treat everything from colds to depression and can handle complex procedures such as brain surgery.\u003cbr/\u003eBut trauma is the specialty. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors see up to 200 severe cases each month, mostly victims of bombs or leftover land mines from earlier conflicts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hospital says that more than 85 percent of their patients come directly from the battlefield. \u003cbr/\u003eBut being so close to the conflict zone means that if a patient makes it to Kandahar alive, the chances are he will stay that way.
