Close up of the book about violin making with the glasses on the book.\u003cbr/\u003eThey call her the queen of instruments. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd even though violin is the smallest of all string instruments many say it deserves to be revered. \u003cbr/\u003eExperts say it one of the most complex instruments and very demanding to play and to make. \u003cbr/\u003eNow a Serbian violin maker is gaining an international reputation for the quality of his instruments. \u003cbr/\u003eViolinist Sonja Novcic is an accomplished musician. \u003cbr/\u003eBut she doesn't not claim sole credit for the sweet sounds she creates. \u003cbr/\u003eNovcic says that the violin maker is partly responsible for the quality of the music. \u003cbr/\u003e \" I have never felt anything like this before. First time I met Jovan I played on one of the instruments which he made long time ago, one of the first ones, and after that I never had the same feeling (when playing on other violins).\"\u003cbr/\u003eJovan Popovic is a traditional violin maker, known locally in Belgrade as the Serbian Stradivari (Stradivarius). \u003cbr/\u003eUsing his Belgrade apartment as his workshop Popovic has been making string instruments for the past 42 years  \u003cbr/\u003eHe has made 172 string instruments, most of them were violins.\u003cbr/\u003eThe most important place to start is with the choice of wood. \u003cbr/\u003ePopovic uses maple tree and spruce, which are considered to be the most resonant trees, that means they have a strong and deep tone which is important when making string instruments. \u003cbr/\u003eThe best Maple tree comes from Velebit mountain, a place where Stradivarius also used to source his wood. \u003cbr/\u003eInstruments made by Italian violinmaker Antonio Stradivari (ca. 1644-1737) are highly prized and only rarely come to auction.\u003cbr/\u003ePopovic learned the craft from Alex Smiglelski, an Ukrainian craftsman, who in turn was an assistant to Gio Batta Morassi a world famous violin maker. \u003cbr/\u003ePopovic talks about his violin with a passion and explains why they call her the queen of all instruments.\u003cbr/\u003e\" (Violin) She really has the every right to stand on the highest pedestal as a work of art.
