We know a lot about the cognition of their close relatives, the chimpanzee, but comparatively orangutans have been very little studied.  Andso this will give us an opportunity to ask some of the same questions that have been asked of chimpanzees but now to ask it of orangutans so we can better understand their cognitive abilities.\"\u003cbr/\u003e6. SOUNDBITE (English) Tara Skoinski, Manager of conservation partnerships, Atlanta Zoo :\u003cbr/\u003e\"Right now we are working on training them to understand the 'touch-screen', they need to actually understand that when they touch the computer screen that is actually registering a response. So we have a very simple programme that just has the picture of an orangutan. And every time they touch the picture the orangutan disappears and they get a treat. And then the next programme that we are using with them is something called  'matching to sample'. This is a very standard program that is used in cognitive tests.  The idea here is they are shown a sample, so they are shown a photograph and then they are shown an additional four photographs and one of them matches the original photo they saw. And so they have to pick the one that matches. And once they learn that basic concept that when we show them a picture, they have to pick the one that matches we can apply that to a whole host of questions.\"\u003cbr/\u003e8. And if they drag their finger across the screen, it will drag that dot of colour. And they can go to screen over here on the right and actually pick which colour they want so if they touch red so when they touch the screen the red paint will come up. And if we see them paint later, you'll  see that they actually like to use a lot of colour so they'll switch the colours around.\" \u003cbr/\u003e13. It will show how incredible these animals are, how unique they are, how like us their intelligence is. So this will enable hopefully people care more about these animals and want to understand what is happening to them in the wild and maybe becoming more active in saving orangutans in the wild.\"\u003cbr/\u003e21. Orangutan touching computer screen\u003cbr/\u003eA zoo in the US state of Georgia has installed computers in their orangutan enclosure.\u003cbr/\u003eThe computers have a variety of programmes to entertain and train the orangutans, but they may be used to help preserve the species too.\u003cbr/\u003eThese orangutans in Atlanta Zoo in the state of Georgia love to swing from ropes and search for food. But they also love playing with computers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe orangutans play the games on a touch screen built into a tree-like structure in the habitat, to blend in with their environment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two Sumatran orangutans are part of new Zoo Atlanta research that uses computer games to study the cognitive skills of primates. \u003cbr/\u003eThey use their lips, face, hands and feet to use the computers' touch screen' in exchange for rewards.\u003cbr/\u003eManager of conservation partnerships at Atlanta Zoo Tara Skoinski explains the programmes they have installed on the orangutans' computer.\u003cbr/\u003eSkoinski says the zoo is currently teaching the primates to use the computer 'touch screens'.\u003cbr/\u003eSkoinski says one of the computer programmes is a painting programme.\u003cbr/\u003eThe primates can choose different colour paints from a panel on the side of the screen and then 'paint' by touching the screen with their fingers.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd zoo visitors get to watch their every computer move on a matching screen, watching from a monitor in front of the orangutan exhibit.\u003cbr/\u003eStoinski say they hope opening the interactive research to the public will raise awareness of the world's rapidly diminishing orangutan population, which is on track to disappear completely in the next decade. \u003cbr/\u003eClients are reminded:
