Its going to be famous because what's its going to produce.\"\u003cbr/\u003e32. Various shots of Michael walking with former gangs members\u003cbr/\u003eMathare in Kenya - it's the township dubbed Africa's worst slum. \u003cbr/\u003eViolent gang warfare has left teenagers dead, as the people struggle daily with a lack of water, fresh food and rising cases of AIDs.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now one person who grew up in the slum is fighting for a brighter future - one where he doesn't have to see friends killed, and neighbours living in grinding poverty.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd his example is finally being followed by some former gang members, now willing to turn their backs on a life of crime.\u003cbr/\u003eJust three kilometres (1.8 miles) from the centre of Nairobi, over half a million people live in grinding poverty in the Mathare slum. \u003cbr/\u003eThere's no clean water or fresh food...  and many people are malnourished. Many others are victims of HIV/AIDS.   \u003cbr/\u003eThere's no basic sewage facilities and raw sewage often flows through the tiny streets between the shanty dwellings that people here call home. \u003cbr/\u003eThe maze of mud clad walls and tin roofed huts makes it impossible for police to monitor crime. \u003cbr/\u003eCriminal gangs control these alleyways and there is a thriving market in illegal drugs and guns. \u003cbr/\u003e27 year old Michael Njuguna grew up in the Mathare slum and has lived all his life alongside the dangerous gangs that control his community.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has seen many of his friends killed and injured as a result of gang violence and gun warfare. \u003cbr/\u003eMany have contracted HIV/ AIDS  and find it difficult to access basic health care.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter he finished school, Michael started getting involved in social work projects. \u003cbr/\u003eHe hopes his work will encourage his neighbours to change their life for the better. \u003cbr/\u003eMichael is a volunteer with the Mathare Youth Organization. \u003cbr/\u003eThis small group of 10 volunteers is trying to educate local children, help HIV/AIDS sufferers and improve relations between different gangs. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, without any economic support or funding there's only some much the volunteers can do.  \u003cbr/\u003eMichael says the biggest challenge is to keep children away from the temptations of a life of crime and its promise of easy money. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also wants to persuade those that have already turned to crime, that there is an alternative.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut unemployment is rampant across the slum. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen Morris Obwuanda's parents died he was left to raise his younger brothers and sisters. \u003cbr/\u003eDesperate for money, he now makes a living brewing illegal alcohol called \"changa\". \u003cbr/\u003eMichael also visits the parents of children who have run away to join local criminal gangs.\u003cbr/\u003eJane Miwikali's son disappeared and soon after she heard that he had been shot dead, in Eastleigh, another sum in East Mathare. \u003cbr/\u003eChristopher Oweny's son is a teen gang member. He tries to persuade his son to attend school instead - acutely aware that young gang members get killed with alarming regularity.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says one of the boys his son hangs around with was killed recently and he fears his son may suffer the same fate.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut there is some hope... \u003cbr/\u003eMichael meets with former gang members who have rejected a life of crime and are trying  to turn their fortunes around. But four of them, Dominic Oxhieng, Felix Oduor, Simon Mwangi and Wilfred Riai say it's an impossible task.\u003cbr/\u003eMichael and other local volunteers are trying to make a difference: he believes
