Lieutenant Colonel Nick Clissett leaves\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eTwo Nepalese Gurkha soldiers have been killed on Monday by an explosion during a mission to clear explosives left over from the war.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is still unclear whether the area had been deliberately booby-trapped by Serbs when they left the area but some reports at the scene suggest that it may have been a NATO cluster bomb.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British Army soldiers were killed as they tried to clear explosives near a school in a village 30 kilometres (20 miles) west of Pristina, Kosovo's capital.\u003cbr/\u003eGurkhas are famous for their stealth and fighting skills and are highly respected soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe elite soldiers have been part of the British Army for more than 180 years- ever since the Gurkhas first impressed officers with their spirited resistance to the British conquest of Nepal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Gurkhas are known for their bravery and loyalty and have won 26 Victoria Crosses down the years, seeing service across Asia in the Second World War and, more recently, the Falklands.\u003cbr/\u003eBut above all the Gurkhas are symbolised by the traditional Nepalese knife, the kukri, a terrifying 18 inch curved blade which the soldiers still use in close combat.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon after the incident occurred, the British K-FOR spokesperson gave this reaction.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Ladies and Gentlemen, I've got a statement to make. I'm sorry to have to announce that an incident occurred at 13.25 hours local time this afternoon, the 21st of June 1999, as a result of which two British soldiers were killed. The incident occurred in the village of Negrovce, thirty kilometres west of Pristina in Kosovo. The soldiers were part of a team clearing munitions from a schoolhouse. An explosion occurred during the clearance process resulting in a number of casualties, both military and civilian. Two soldiers are confirmed dead. It is believed that at least two civilians are also dead. One other civilian is stable in a military field hospital in Pristina. The soldiers were members of 69 Gurkha Field Squadron of 36 Engineer Regiment, Royal Engineers, based at Maidstone in Kent. We're in the process of informing next of kin as I speak. This tragic incident underlines the dangers that face K-FOR troops as we work to create a safe and secure environment for the return of the displaced peoples of Kosovo.
