Long shot bookshelves at Terman Engineering Library
The good old-fashioned book could soon be a thing of the past, even in university libraries.
Anti-intellectual? Not exactly - libraries are increasingly digitising their books as part of plans to broaden access to their own and other collections.
The book - a once-revered instrument of learning is on its way out - at least at Stanford University.
Housed in the newly opened Jen-Hsun Huang Engineering Centre the Terman Engineering Library is at the leading edge of modern learning. And that means fewer books than ever before.
With a relaxed atmosphere, students now use a mixture of laptops, desktop computers and traditional books, but more materials are becoming available exclusively online.
The new library measures 6,000 square feet, compared to about 16,000 square feet in the facility it replaces. That's largely because 86 percent of its books, or about 70,000 volumes, have been put into storage, in exchange for electronic content.
Digital books make it easier to search for particular words or how many times a certain expression is used, and to compare this information with that of other books, which can open doors to new types of research. It also makes it possible to study nearly anywhere.
"I think for the faculty and students the major advantage is that the collection is available to them anytime, anyplace. So if they're doing a sabbatical in Beijing, or studying in a dorm room at 2 am, they can access the collections of the library in a way that they never could before. In addition, the use of the collection in terms of searchability by keyword is much better than we've been able to do in terms of making the physical volumes available," says Robert Schwarzwalder, Associate University Librarian for Stanford's Science and Engineering Libraries.
But many books are not yet available electronically. While science and engineering publishers have been quick to make the change and offer their books online, many others have been slower to offer e-books, according to Schwarzwalder.
That's why the shelves at the centre of the small library are still full of books. But as digital versions become available, many will be removed to create more open space for study.
"So as you can see the library is not entirely bookless. We still do have a number of materials that are not available in digital form or where by use of the materials we've deemed it necessary to keep a physical copy on hand," says Schwarzwalder.
The volumes that remain may become cultural relics, like these books from the personal libraries of Stephen P. Timoshenko and Fred Terman, the library's namesake.
Regardless of nostalgia and sentiment, behind the transfer of paper books to digital copies is a giant battle over copyright law.
Google announced in 2004 that it was partnering with several universities including Stanford to scan books from their collections. Authors later sued to stop the project, which they worried could infringe on their copyrights.
Professor Pamela Samuelson, a respected authority on copyright law at UC Berkeley's School of Law, cautions that there are many issues that come up when print collections are turned into digital archives.
Some libraries are experimenting with lending out digital copies, and a Google Books settlement would bring greater availability by subscription, she says.
"If the settlement of the Google Books case is approved, which at this point is still up in the air, then it would be possible for Stanford and for other universities to pay an institutional subscription fee to get access to those books and so as many students as wanted to look at the books would be able to do so.
