Wide of machines cleaning the road in the background as two police officers patrol\u003cbr/\u003eAnimals at the Bucharest zoo in Romania were struggling to keep warm in freezing temperatures as a cold snap affecting eastern Europe continued to spread chaos throughout the region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only creatures who seemed to be in their element on Friday were two Siberian tigers, Nic, a bulky male, and Luna, an orphaned female.\u003cbr/\u003eThey laid quietly in the snow and then paraded up and down their cages, coaxed on by the zoo staff.\u003cbr/\u003eMarc and Ella, a pair of lions briefly frolicked in the snow on Friday but quickly scampered inside their cage where they have underground heating. \u003cbr/\u003eAt -11 Celsius (12.2 Fahrenheit), it's a bit too cold for fun in the snow. \u003cbr/\u003eChief vet Codrut Visoiu told the Associated Press that keeping the animals sufficiently warm is the zoo's main concern during the cold spell, the coldest since a deep freeze in 1954 according to weather forecasters. \u003cbr/\u003eVisoiu said temperatures have plunged to -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit ) overnight at the zoo, just north of the Romanian capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cold has so far claimed one victim at the zoo, a bird that died this week.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past week, Romania, like the rest of eastern Europe, has been hit by snowstorms and bitter weather, with temperatures plunging to minus 32 Celsius (minus 25.6 Fahrenheit) in some parts of Romania, killing more than a dozen people.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Belgrade, commuters were facing yet another day of travel misery with cars getting stuck in heavy snow and traffic moving at snail pace.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It took me 45 minutes just to cover a distance that I would usually cover in 10 minutes,\" said one Belgrade resident.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Almost everything has collapsed today.
