government intends to revamp the taxivan industry which could result in a loss of thousands of jobs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe drivers are so angry about it, they took to the streets in an angry protest and headed to the town of Kyalami where an exposition of new models for taxivans were on display.\u003cbr/\u003eStriking South African taxivan drivers were marching through the streets of Johannesburg on Thursday carrying rocks and sticks.\u003cbr/\u003eSome strikers were seen pulling other drivers, who were not striking, out of their vehicles and beating them.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice and troops were dispatched to keep order, but some ended up in skirmishes with the striking drivers.\u003cbr/\u003eThere were unconfirmed reports of shots being fired.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice Inspector Mary Martins-Engelbrecht said there were forty to fifty taxis carrying 400 to 500 hundred drivers on a protest drive to Kyalami, where an exposition was being held to display new models for taxivans.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says the current taxivans, used to transport mostly black South Africans, are not safe.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vehicles often exceed the speed limit and are in poor condition.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government wants a new model of taxivan on the road and has set-up a competition among 8 van manufacturers, of which 3 will be chosen.\u003cbr/\u003eTaxivan operators say they will lose their jobs, in part because the new models will hold more passengers.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrent taxivans hold 18 passengers tops while the new models will be able to carry between 18 and 35
