It's thought up to 40 (m) million people could be infected by the year 2000.  \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Translation from French)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The HIV hits child and adults, rich and poor, black and white and the north as well as  the south. And like pollution it knows no boundaries. It crosses territories, crosses  disciplines and crosses institutions\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Frederico Mayor, head of UNESCO\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile at this clinic in Washington D.C., AIDS patients are faced with a confusing  array of prescription drugs and alternative therapies.  Many of the drugs cause severe  side effects and their effectiveness is unproven.  There is still little progress in  developing a vaccine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe good news is that researchers say the disease is growing at a slower rate.  In the  United States, 62-thousand new cases were diagnosed last year, up just three percent.   Education and prevention programmes seem to be making a difference.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is primarily a disease of prevention. We have to prevent it before it happens. That's  how we're going to decrease the incidence at this point in time. So we have to keep our  guard up and not let these statistics kind of lull us into some false sense of security  because as soon as that happens then I think we'll lose the battle.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Roxanne Cox-Iyamu, Director of Medical Resources, Whitman-  Walker Clinic\u003cbr/\u003eBecause the side effects of antiviral drugs are so severe, most patients won't take them  until the final stages of the disease.  \u003cbr/\u003ePeople need to be diagnosed as early as possible with the HIV infection, gotten into  care as early as possible, so that they can begin this immunological monitoring, so that  when they fall below a certain level you can put into place the therapies that will  actually ward off these life threatening illnesses and that will translate into a better  quality of life.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. John Ward, AIDS Surveillance Director, Center for Disease  Control\u003cbr/\u003eBut patients must choose between the quality and the quantity of the time they have  left. \u003cbr/\u003eYou know it's an ongoing question, what good is having a long life if it's going to be  spent horizontal and in pain.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: John Vitale, HIV positive\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers are conducting clinical trials on a new class of drugs, called protease   inhibitors, which may attack the virus in its early stages and prevent it from multiplying  in the body.  In the meantime, anti-virals are the best weapon.\u003cbr/\u003eThese treatments are the last resort in our fight against the HIV disease. The goal and  the hope however is to be able to use effective drugs against the HIV itself early on in  the disease to prevent the patient from progressing into the last phase of the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Whaijen Soo, VP virology and AIDS research, Hoffmann La  Roche\u003cbr/\u003eAnti-virals, such as AZT, have shown some promising signs. Research shows that they  are successful at preventing transmission of the virus between infected mothers and  their babies.
