Wide shot of rice field with worker\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea says it is trying to make extra efforts to solve its food problem this year.\u003cbr/\u003eIt follows recent warnings from one of the main international aid agencies that supplies for the country are running low.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Food Programme (WFP) announced in March this year that funding shortfalls for its North Korea operations threaten to cut aid to hundreds of thousands of hungry people in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korean officials took Associated Press Television News to one of the country's showpiece collective farms to see this year's rice crop being sown. The officials were frank about the challenges their country faces in feeding its people.\u003cbr/\u003eWorkers at the Taegam Collective Farm - which is just thirty kilometres from the North Korean capital of Pyongyang - enjoy much better living conditions than the rest of the country, according to the few international observers familiar with the reclusive state.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Taegam, farmers are starting to sow this year's crop of rice, which is the country's preferred staple food.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korean officials hosting the visit to Taegam Cooperative Farm acknowledged that their country suffers from food shortages.\u003cbr/\u003eIn April, a regular parliamentary meeting declared that \"29.1 per cent more funds than the previous year will be invested in agriculture so that all efforts of the country can be directed to decisively solving the people's food problem.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut it added \"the tasks facing the Korean people this year are difficult and vast\", according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).\u003cbr/\u003eFarming conditions remain basic and difficult. \u003cbr/\u003eEven at Taegam, a manager explained they have to have more people working in the fields because they don't have enough fuel to run tractors and other mechanical equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eA farm official said they hope to increase rice production from 5.5 tons per hectare to as much as seven tons per hectare this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe WFP said it is trying to find funds to provide food assistance to as much as third of North Korea's population this year. \u003cbr/\u003eIt helps to feed 6.5 (m) million people considered most at risk of hunger out of an estimated population of 23 (m) million.\u003cbr/\u003eA survey by international aid organisations and the North Korean government released this year found that \"no less than thirty seven per cent of North Korean children are chronically malnourished, or stunted, and one-third of mothers are malnourished,\" according to the WFP.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is rare for the North Korean government to admit publicly to its inability to provide food for its people, and even rarer for it to allow international reporters access to see the food conditions in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korean officials hope this year's harvest will be successful in providing more food. But aid agencies warn that funding to support hungry North Korean citizens is still necessary. \u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea officially refers to its famine of the 1990s as the \"period of arduous march\". \u003cbr/\u003eIn spite of improved conditions, it's still not clear how the country's people can emerge from the suffering of daily
