Food and Agricultural Organisation is not to blame for the recent rise in world prices of corn, rice, wheat and other basic foodstuffs - and insists it is not useful to look for scapegoats.\u003cbr/\u003eDiouf has also called on wealthier nations to make expensive farming resources available to farmers in poor countries. He did not specify what types of resources, during a news conference on Wednesday in Paris.\u003cbr/\u003eDiouf said: \"we are not in a Greek tragedy where human beings are powerless in front of their fate. \" He warned that greater assistance to the Third World was required, to boost domestic food production.\u003cbr/\u003eRising costs, stoked by fuel prices, unpredictable weather and increased demand from India and China, have already sparked violent protests across the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe price of rice has more than doubled in the last five weeks according to the World Food Program. \u003cbr/\u003eThe World Bank estimates food prices have risen by 83 percent in three years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first global food crisis since World War 2 threatens 20 (m) million protesters call for immediate action, long term solutions are likely to be slow, costly and complicated, experts warn.\u003cbr/\u003eEgypt's government rushed to contain an explosive situation in the northern industrial city of Mahalla el-Kobra, rocked by two days of deadly riots over high prices and low wages in April.\u003cbr/\u003eWith prices for many staples in Egypt doubling over the past year, the government has also tried to stem complaints over shortages in supplies of subsidised bread, on which the country's poor rely.   \u003cbr/\u003eFights over subsidised bread killed several people. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd unrest provoked by the food crisis has also led to deaths in Cameroon and Haiti, and cost Haitian Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis his job.\u003cbr/\u003eLast month, Port-au-Prince descended deep into chaos as looters and protesters took control of the streets.  \u003cbr/\u003eBands of young men carrying sticks and rocks set up roadblocks of burning tires. \u003cbr/\u003eMobs looted stores, warehouses and government offices and the sound of gunfire rang through slums and upscale neighbourhoods alike.  \u003cbr/\u003eHaiti, the poorest country in the northern hemisphere, has been hit especially hard because it imports nearly all of its food, and most people live on less than two US dollars a day. \u003cbr/\u003eEvolving diets among burgeoning middle classes in India and China will help double the demand for food, particularly grain intensive meat and dairy products, by 2030, the World Bank says.\u003cbr/\u003eRobert Zoellick, the bank's head, claims as many as 100 (m) million people could be forced deeper into poverty. \u003cbr/\u003eUN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said rising food costs threaten to cancel strides made toward the
