Beach seen through branches of mangrove tree\u003cbr/\u003eMexico has added 45 wetlands to an international registry that promotes conservation and sustainable development, despite environmentalists warning that wetlands remain poorly protected in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironment Secretary Juan Elvira Quesada said on Saturday that the 2.7 million (m) hectares (6.7 (m) million acres) of newly registered wetlands dot the Mexican landscape from the Caribbean coast to Baja, California's Bay of San Quintin and the southernmost state of Chiapas. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder the treaty the total area of wetlands has been increased to eight (m) million hectares (19.8 (m) million acres).\u003cbr/\u003eThe additional areas bring Mexico's wetlands inventory to 112 sites, second only to the United Kingdom under the 1971 international Convention on Wetlands, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Mexico has added 45 new sites to the list of internationally important wetland sites of the Ramsar convention. and mangrove forests since the late 1960s, when construction took off in the Caribbean resort town of Cancun, an area of coral reefs and fragile lagoons.\u003cbr/\u003eAs large luxury hotels spread south from Cancun along the coast of Quintana Roo state, environmentalists have repeatedly warned of the impact of tourism; inland waterways and swaths of the Pacific coast face similar pressures.\u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace blames the government, citing a bill that is now before Congress that would allow developers to raze mangrove swamps in return for a tax and promises to replace the destroyed trees.\u003cbr/\u003eErnesto Enkerlin, Mexico's commissioner for protected areas, said the wetlands should have been protected years ago. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Sometimes we have to rehabilitate
