They are in barracks when American troops are located. They provide routine medical support to the troops - if someone falls ill there with influenza then they swab them to find out what it is - these laboratories are also certified and accredited. We are also aware that Taiwan is moving very, very fast - that's for the international laboratories. For within the United States, the compilation is done by CAP (College of American Pathologists) and I understand they do report back to HHS (the US Department of Health and Human Services). We don't know how many have destroyed the material. The goal is to make our inventory on Friday. Wide of press conference room\u003cbr/\u003eCountries around the world were destroying vials of a pandemic flu strain on Wednesday which were sent to thousands of labs as part of a routine test kit, risking a global flu epidemic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN health agency said Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore had destroyed their samples, while Taiwan was moving quickly. \u003cbr/\u003eGermany said all its vials had also been destroyed through exposure to extreme heat.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly 5-thousand labs in 18 countries or territories - mostly in the United States but also in Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, Belgium, Bermuda, Chile, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Mexico, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Taiwan - received vials from a US company\u003cbr/\u003ethat supplies kits used for internal quality control tests.\u003cbr/\u003eCountries were urged by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to destroy samples of the dangerous virus because of the slight but real risk it could trigger a global outbreak.\u003cbr/\u003eThe WHO said governments of all the countries involved have the addresses of the laboratories which received the test kits and are following up on the destruction of the samples.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin the United States, the inventory is being taken by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and for the moment the WHO said it was unsure how many samples had been destroyed there so far.\u003cbr/\u003eAll countries are expected to report back to the WHO by Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe germ, the 1957 H2N2 \"Asian flu\" strain, killed between 1 million (m) and 4 million (m) people. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has not been included in flu vaccines since 1968, and anyone born after that date has little or no immunity to it.\u003cbr/\u003eWHO's influenza chief, Klaus Stohr, said the company which sent out the virus samples - Meridian Bioscience Inc. of Newtown, Ohio - abided by current US regulations.\u003cbr/\u003eRoutine viruses can be handled in labs with a basic level of biosafety protection. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, very dangerous viruses, such as Ebola, can only be handled at labs with top-level safety measures. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 1957 flu virus has for years been a level 2 virus, but many countries have upgraded it to a biosafety level of 3 because so many people have no
