Medium of people eating rice \u003cbr/\u003eFor thirty years, the people of China have been trying to get the very best from their rice yield by cross-breeding different types of plants to produce rice which is, they claim, tastier and more resistant than \"normal\" rice.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled hybrid rice this kind of plant is now grown on more than half of China's rice fields.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow the developers of hybrid rice are researching how to genetically modify rice to \"improve\" its quality still further. \u003cbr/\u003eBut campaign group Greenpeace says rice is such a staple food for so many people - no further modifications should be made. \u003cbr/\u003eChina has witnessed a drastic increase in rice production in recent years as hybrid rice technology is adopted by more and more farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 1976 when hybrid rice was commercialised in China, millions of Chinese farmers have been planting the crop under the guidance of experts in the field of agriculture technology. \u003cbr/\u003eThe hybrid rice is said to produce increased yield, taste and resistance to pests and disease, making it popular amongst farmers in the provinces which rely heavily on rice production, such as Hubei Province and Hunan Province in the middle of China.\u003cbr/\u003eHybrid rice tastes good and has high production yield and that is the main reason large number of farmers are planting  it, said a farmer who give his surname as Zhou. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The whole village has been planting hybrid rice for years,\" said Ding Dongguo, a 61-year-old farmer in Hunan Province,\" I have dropped planting normal rice and in the future we all will plant hybrid rice in all the fields in our village.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrom 1976 to 2005, the accumulative harvested areas of hybrid rice in China reached 340 million hectares. \u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, the annual harvested area under hybrid rice has reached 15 million, accounting for 58 percent of total rice area. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Yuan Longping, of the China National Hybrid Rice Research Centre, is popularly known as the \"father of hybrid rice\". \u003cbr/\u003eMore than forty years ago he initiated the research into cross breeding rice with genetically different plants and animals to increase the new plants vigor and resistance. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1975 he successfully produced a rice with a higher yield, which was commercialised across China one year later. \u003cbr/\u003eNow 76 years old, Yuan is still working on the third phase of his super hybrid rice breeding programme. \u003cbr/\u003eHe hopes that one day a crop yield of 13.5 tons per hectare will be achieved through breeding technology.\u003cbr/\u003eYuan is planning to export the hybrid rice technology to other countries so as to help them with rice production growth.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that if farmers could \"produce one more ton of rice in one hectare, we can feed one 100 million people in the world,\". \u003cbr/\u003eYuan is also researching increasing rice yield through genetic engineering (genetic modification) in his lab. \u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organisation defines genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as \"organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, also between non-related species.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's good to have a try,\" said Yuan, \"if we can increase rice yield by adopting some advanced technology, why not?\"\u003cbr/\u003eYuan said his research is still on the phrase of experiment in the lab and he has not employed this technology in his rice breeding programme. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says it is important to be cautious with genetic engineering saying  \" some type of gene may be poisonous and harmful to people's health and that's dangerous...\"\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the environmental group Greenpeace say that GM rice has been sold and grown illegally in the Chinese province of Hubei. \u003cbr/\u003eMa Tianjie, Greenpeace's food and agriculture campaigner says that as rice is the staple diet of the Chinese it is important not to expose the population to potentially harmful genetically modified  food. \u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace says there are signs that some genetically modified rice could cause allergic reactions, saying that when some version was tested on mice it resulted in allergies.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists say that GM rice contains high risks of ruining the environment by destroying the quality of farm land and altering forever the genetics of rice. \u003cbr/\u003eChina is considering commercialisation of GM rice and officials have indicated a decision may be made this year, according to Greenpeace campaigner Ma Shijie.\u003cbr/\u003eChina is a major consumer as well as exporter of rice and it is expected that the commercialisation of GE rice may have significant trade and market impacts, particularly in countries like Japan and Korea where
