Various shots injured in hospital beds \u003cbr/\u003eUnidentified gunmen shot and killed a pro-rebel legislator as he attended midnight Mass at a church in eastern Sri Lanka, the Defence Ministry said Sunday, sparking fears of a return to civil war in the island nation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attackers fired at Joseph Pararajasingham, 71, during the Christmas service at St Michael's Church in Batticaloa, the site of frequent\u003cbr/\u003eskirmishes between rebel factions, a military spokesman said.\u003cbr/\u003ePararajasingham's wife, Sugunam, and eight other people were wounded in the shooting and are being treated in local hospitals. \u003cbr/\u003ePararajasingham's bodyguards returned fire, but the assailants escaped.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a statement, the government blamed the Tamil Tigers armed separatist group for the attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThe statement said Pararajasingham had not originally planned to attend the mass, but had been convinced by a telephone caller that he should be present at the service.\u003cbr/\u003eA police officer in Batticaloa, eastern Sri Lanka's main town, said the lawmaker died instantly after two assailants fired four shots into his chest.\u003cbr/\u003ePararajasingham represented the Tamil National Alliance, a party allied to the the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which has been fighting the government for two decades. \u003cbr/\u003eThey wish to create a Tamil homeland for Sri Lanka's 3.2 million (m) ethnic Tamil minority.\u003cbr/\u003eA pro-rebel Web site reported the incident without comment. \u003cbr/\u003eThere was no claim of responsibility, but a breakaway faction of the rebels is known to oppose the Alliance. \u003cbr/\u003eThe shooting came as envoys from Japan, Britain, Norway and the European Union -- key backers of Sri Lanka's peace process -- met with the rebels' political leader, S. P. Thamilselvan, on Saturday in the northern guerrilla stronghold of Kilinochchi to raise concerns about growing violence.\u003cbr/\u003eViolence has also escalated in Sri Lanka's ethnic Tamil-majority north and parts of the east since mainstream rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran\u003cbr/\u003ethreatened to resume his struggle for an independent Tamil homeland if the government fails to address Tamils' grievances.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Tamil Tigers started fighting in 1983 for a separate Tamil homeland in the island nation's north and east, claiming discrimination by the majority Sinhalese. \u003cbr/\u003eThe conflict killed about 65-thousand people.\u003cbr/\u003ePararajasingham started his career as a junior government official in his hometown of Batticaloa and entered parliament in
