Close up decorated grave saying \"Peace in Oaxaca\"\u003cbr/\u003eMexicans gathered at the gravesides of their loved ones on Tuesday evening, as they do each year in preparation for the November 1-2 Day of the Dead celebration.   \u003cbr/\u003eFamily members decorated graves with elaborate pictures made of sprinkled coloured sand and powder paint, and brought candles and flowers to the famous Xoxocotlan cemetery outside the city of Oaxaca.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Oaxaca itself, the annual festivities were overshadowed by the violent clashes between police and protesters which have killed 8 people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city has since May been the scene of protests and violence\u003cbr/\u003eTourists normally flock to the cemetery in Xoxocotlan at this time of year to observe the traditionally patterned graves of flower petals or brightly coloured sand.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this year it was a solemn affair mainly attended by local people. \u003cbr/\u003eMost were scared away by a five-month-long seizure of Oaxaca City by leftists and striking teachers, and Sunday's police raid to retake the city.\u003cbr/\u003eNearby, a group of young men strummed guitars and softly sang ballads beside a relative's grave; street stands offered \"bread of the dead\" buns and other traditional foods nearby.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Oaxaca City, protesters erected altars to those killed on Sunday and over the course of the five month conflict.\u003cbr/\u003eDay of the Dead traditions are stronger in rural, southern states like Oaxaca, where families build elaborate altars and stay at the graves of dead relatives into the night.\u003cbr/\u003eRooted in the Roman Catholic faith, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day are celebrated throughout Latin America, with families picnicking at the graves of loved ones. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Day of the Dead tradition is strongest in Mexico, where the holiday originated from ancient harvest rituals associated with the Aztec god of the dead.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Day of the Dead is a celebration of both life and death. The faithful gather in graveyards in hopes of contacting the dead through prayer, song and offerings of food and flowers. \u003cbr/\u003eThose who died as children are remembered before dawn on
