Wide of Putney Bridge over the Thames with crowd and rainbow\u003cbr/\u003eMembers of London's Bengali community gathered on Monday on the banks of the River Thames for the ritual immersion of the statue of Goddess Durga, marking the end of the Hindu festival Durga Puja.\u003cbr/\u003eThey joined Bengalis all over the world who celebrated the festival which marks the victory of good over evil and is the most important holiday in their religious calendar.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe five-day festival had opened with a number of events in London, including the creating of the giant-sized statue by Bengali craftsmen working at the British Museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe red sari-clad figure of the goddess was made of clay, straw and organic paint, and showed her defeating her arch-enemy, the evil buffalo-demon Mahisha. \u003cbr/\u003eThe festival culminated in the ceremonial immersion of the goddess, along with six other statues of Durga's \"family\" - the gods Ganesha, Kartikeya, Saraswati and Lakshmi, into the waters of the Thames, symbolically allowing them to return to their heavenly home.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian River Ganges, held sacred by millions of Hindus, is traditionally where the ritual takes place.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers said in order to do the ceremony at the Thames a small purification ceremony was necessary.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Thames is not mentioned in any of the ancient Hindu scriptures. So we have to do something, we have got to purify it. So in a minute you will see a small ceremony where we will use the Ganges water to purify the Thames so that Mother Durga can be floated away in the holy water,\" said Kalyan Majumdar, one of the organisers.\u003cbr/\u003eWater from the Ganges was sprinkled on the Thames by a priest as the ritual got underway and devotees offered prayers and danced to the beat of traditional drummers.\u003cbr/\u003eDurga and her \"family\" were set afloat on the waters where the statues are expected to gradually dissolve and materials from which they were made will be returned to their
