Bush's announcement of a bold new space exploration initiative.\u003cbr/\u003eBush has proposed developing a new spacecraft to carry Americans back to the moon by 2015, and to establish a long-term base there as an eventual springboard to Mars and beyond.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, crowds gathered to touch a rock brought back from the moon three decades ago by the last US Apollo missions to the satellite's surface.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral of those asked said they felt America needed a new challenge, and that there were likely to be many technological and medical discoveries that came along with the mission.\u003cbr/\u003eBut others were doubtful of the need to go back to the barren and desolate moon, especially when faced with the prospect of higher taxes or budgetary cutbacks.\u003cbr/\u003eA new poll conducted for the Associated Press by Ipsos-Public Affairs found 48 percent favouring the idea and 48 percent opposing it. The poll results were released on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eIn other findings more than half, 55 percent, favoured spending any extra money on concerns like education and health care rather than on space research, while 42 percent defended use of the money for space.  73 percent said it was important to continue sending humans into space despite the shuttle accident almost a year ago that killed seven astronauts.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd asked whether the moon and Mars should be explored by humans or robots, an option that can be less expensive, 57 percent said robots and 38 percent said
