Various of Japanese children at kindergarten\u003cbr/\u003eA senior US official said on Tuesday that Japan''s policy on international child custody cases has \"raised very real concerns\"  in Washington and suggested that US-Japan relations could be affected if the issue remains unresolved.\u003cbr/\u003eMany foreign fathers who are separated or divorced from their Japanese wives aren''t able to see their children because Japanese law grants custody to only one spouse, nearly always the mother.\u003cbr/\u003eAssistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell addressed a news conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, shortly after meeting with about 10 American citizen parents of children who have been abducted to Japan. \u003cbr/\u003eCampbell told the news conference he had been meeting with some of the affected parents for months, and described many of their situations as \"tragic\".\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the issue, if unresolved, \"has the potential to raise very real concerns, something that all of us seek to avoid\".\u003cbr/\u003eUS citizen, Steve Christie, who is currently denied access to his son, took part in a protest against the Japanese ruling on separated parents in Tokyo in July 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said on Tuesday: \"If parents decide they can''t maintain a relationship any more and get divorced, that''s fine, that''s their business. but it shouldn''t sever the relationship with their children.
