In this case we have a 9.0-9.3 main shock that happened in December, now we have an earthquake that is 8.7 and who knows what it will end up being in a couple of days. prove even more powerful.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials on the scene are still trying to assess the damage and scientists are examining data collected at laboratories such as the one at the California Institute of Technology.\u003cbr/\u003eKerry Sieh, Professor of Geology, told reporters at a hastily called news conference that scientists had been waiting for an event of this magnitude as a follow-up to December's quake.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the United Nations in New York, the UN Disaster Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland said the UN had yet to receive reports of casualties or damage. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said that his agency was ready to provide any help  necessary.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the State Department in Washington, spokesman Adam Ereli said the undersecretaries involved in the region had met and that coordinated relief efforts were underway.\u003cbr/\u003eEreli said US Embassies in the region had been notified and ambassadors instructed to offer assistance to local governments.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also said that much had been learned since December 26 earthquake that triggered a tsunami in the region that killed at least 174,000 people in 11 Indian Ocean nations,
