Hallway outside operating theatre on Comfort\u003cbr/\u003eIn New Orleans, the two major public hospitals have been declared unsalvageable.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials at Louisiana State Health Care Services, who run both Charity Hospital and University Hospitals, have issued a warrant on both facilities as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth hospitals, which served 500,000 patients a year, are damaged beyond repair and must be replaced, according to health care services officials.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, University Health Care Systems said they were committed to rebuilding the trauma health care delivery system for the poor and indigent in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eThe chief of hospitals put the damage estimates to Charity Hospital alone at more than 340 (m) million US dollars, and to University Hospital at more than 105 (m) million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Orleans may soon be left without any major operating hospitals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Baltimore-based hospital ship, US Naval Hospital Ship \"Comfort\", may be heading home soon, according to the US Navy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Comfort\" could leave New Orleans as soon as Friday at the earliest, but will probably leave sometime next week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Comfort\" left on September 2 for the Gulf Coast, arriving in New Orleans on September 29 after two weeks docked off the shores of Mississippi. Doctors on board have seen 18 patients since its arrival.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 894 feet (272.5 metres) vessel is one of the largest trauma hospitals in the country, according to the US Navy, and is equipped with everything including 12 operating rooms, a dental clinic and a morgue.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ship also contains a helicopter landing pad and is designed to treat large numbers of battlefield
