Close-up pan Muslim worshippers walking past Hebrew sign\u003cbr/\u003eA flourishing Muslim population in the United States, combined with increased attendance during the holy month of Ramadan, has lead to a severe shortage of mosques.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Northern Virginia, one congregation has found a unique way to jointly address its lack of prayer space with a desire to reach across traditional religious boundaries.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of their worshippers have been saying their prayers in a synagogue - a Jewish house of worship.\u003cbr/\u003eFriday noon prayers during Ramadan, the faithful arrive in small groups heeding the Call To Prayer.\u003cbr/\u003eWorshippers in Reston, Virginia, typically leave their workplace during lunch hour and find themselves at the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation synagogue. \u003cbr/\u003eThe synagogue's social hall is rented by the  All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) mosque for both Friday prayers and evening prayers during Ramadan.\u003cbr/\u003eEntering the hall the faithful leave their worldly concerns behind for a short period of time. \u003cbr/\u003eWorshippers from ADAMS and the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation have worked together in a variety of ways for about a decade.\u003cbr/\u003eSo when the overflow mosque closed, Rabbi Robert Nosanchuk and Imam Mohamed Magid agreed on a ground-breaking way forward.\u003cbr/\u003eRabbi Nosanchuk extended an invitation to host Muslim prayer services, he says, because both communities have an existing relationship built on trust and understanding.\u003cbr/\u003eThat is a sentiment shared by Imam Magid.\u003cbr/\u003e\"One of the beautiful things we have learned from this experience, that we - both of us - have the same challenges as an Imam and a Rabbi to explain our relationship, but also we come to know that our community, both congregations, are very open, very warm to one another and supportive to our work,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThat is not to say that even within their, self-described, moderate Jewish and Muslim congregations, that there weren't issues.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Not everyone in the Jewish community agrees on the importance of this kind of relationship with Muslims and I am certain not everyone in the Islamic community agrees with this kind of work ... but it is precisely doing it that forces all of us in our communities to confront the prejudices we have and hopefully to respond to them by raising awareness and raising tolerance,\"  Rabbi Nosanchuk explains.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is not an exact count of practicing Muslims in America. The US census does not collect data on religious identity, but most religious experts believe that there are between six and eight (m) million followers of Islam in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eTrying to cope with the overflow during the holy month of Ramadan, the ADAMS mosque has rented space from hotels, a wedding hall and one other synagogue in Ashburn as well as the facility in Reston.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past nine years, ADAMS worshippers have grown in number from 200 to more than 5,000 families, so space is at a premium.\u003cbr/\u003eRabbi Nosanchuk keeps a close eye on the tenants in his synagogue every Friday, to make sure they have everything they need.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the synagogue's social hall the prayer mats are laid with care, and for the hundreds that attend, the service is indistinguishable to many held during Ramadan in the U.S.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen listen to the sermon led by Imam Magid in the back of the same room.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe very existence of such an arrangement is 'super unusual' says Georgetown University Religion and International Affairs Professor, John Esposito.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Historically, you know, your average Catholic, Protestant, Jew  or Muslim would be stunned, shocked, maybe even horrified at the idea that somebody of another faith would come and pray there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe believes the rarity of sharing a place of worship between Jews and Muslims is just as much about fallout from the Arab-Israeli conflict as it is about religious differences.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I cannot see this kind of situation occurring at this point in time in Israel, and or Palestine.  But, I could also not see it occurring in your average Muslim country, I could not see it occurring in a lot of other places,\" Esposito said.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, both the Rabbi and the Imam agree that living in their multicultural part of northern Virginia, they have more in common than many would believe.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We share the same neighbourhoods, they go to the same schools. The economic downturn has impacted everyone in America and therefore we as Americans - whether Jewish or Muslims - our issues and our common concerns are what united us,\" says Imam Magid.\u003cbr/\u003eThe idea of sharing worship space in this community didn't start with these two religious leaders.\u003cbr/\u003eRabbi Nosanchuk says an earlier invitation, before his own synagogue was built, was extended to his congregation by a neighbouring Catholic church.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is similar to what happens to us on the Jewish high holiday observances of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We have overflow crowds and so we host many of our services at a neighbouring church - who welcomes us with hospitality and who draws us near as an act of religious faith and understanding and also frankly as an opportunity to welcome neighbours and to make a difference in the community.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBoth the Imam and the Rabbi have been heartened by the reaction to their unusual working relationship and are planning future projects together - including a trip next year to the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003eWorshipper Ambreen Ahmed says she is thrilled to have a prayer space that is close to her work and not overcrowded.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I was surprised, but then after that when I came here and saw how nicely everything is set up and how well done it is ... I am very happy with it,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth the mosque and synagogue are members of larger movements, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the Union for Reform Judaism.\u003cbr/\u003eImam Magid and Rabbi Nosanchuk say there may be ten more sites around the country where a reform Jewish synagogue and an ISNA mosque are pairing for interfaith dialogue.\u003cbr/\u003eThose efforts are still at an early stage, but these two leaders intend to be setting their own example of religious pluralism for years to
