As I said, the release has happened unconditionally. And since the beginning the Somalis have been the ones who have been discussing this. The I-C-R-C has never been directly involved in the discussions. We have always left the Somalis to find a solution among themselves. This is a rule in Somalia now. The clans are ruling the society there. There are warlords. There is a whole system of ways - a whole way to find a solution in Somalia - where the I-C-R-C cannot get involved. It would have not been a proper solution there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Michael Kleiner, International Committee of the Red Cross, Africa spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eThe captors had demanded up to one (m) million dollars in ransom money.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hostages included a naturalised American Somali - identified as Ibrahim Ahmad - two Swiss, a Norwegian, a German, a Belgian, a French nurse and a Somali. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pilots are Kenyan and South African.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Red Cross said they wanted to get the ten former hostages to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, as quickly as possible to ensure their continued safety. \u003cbr/\u003eThere have been conflicting reports about the captors' demands, but a Nairobi-based diplomat monitoring the kidnapping said elders from the Abgal subclan had been pressing for their release.\u003cbr/\u003eLater on Friday, guards patrolled the area outside Kasani Hospital, where the released hostages were taken.\u003cbr/\u003eMohamed Hussein Aideed, a Somali leader involved in the negotiations, visited the former hostages at the hospital before they left for the airport, en route to Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said Somali leaders would always remember the past 10 days because support groups demanding the release of the hostages had allowed local leaders to bargain with the kidnappers.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We thank them for their support during our negotiations to give us a chance for unconditional release for the hostages, which we succeeded (in doing), and the community of Somali leaders who have played a great role in representing the Somali society to release the hostages.
