Berlin.\u003cbr/\u003eMany analysts have argued the SPD could benefit from a period in opposition that would let them regroup.\u003cbr/\u003eGermany's three opposition parties appeared to have gained in the past four years, with all of them headed for their best results ever. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, all three parties scored less than 10 percent of the vote each.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the outcome on Sunday was particularly painful for the Social Democrats, Merkel's party also performed poorly. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result wasn't much better than their own worst postwar performance - 31 percent, in 1949.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, Merkel's conservatives were relaxed, seeing the surge in support for the Free Democrats as a vote for their own
