I have this disease. I have (pause) what is it?\" Winship questions first year student Worthington.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Worthington answers Winship repeats: \"Alzheimer's disease.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWinship and \"buddy\" Jared Worthington are building a friendship.\u003cbr/\u003eThis visit to the aquarium is one of many, they dine together, visit museums and generally chat about Winship's own medical career and Worthington's own plans.\u003cbr/\u003eThe programme helps erase the stigma of Alzheimer's and is laudable for introducing students to medical opportunities related to aging and dementia, according to  the Alzheimer's Association which oversees outreach services.\u003cbr/\u003eWorthington says: \"It's a good relationship where he can sort of impart his knowledge to me and also teach me about, you know, what it's like to have Alzheimer's and what it's like to have a disease like that and so I can use that knowledge in the future to sort of inform how I interact with patients and hopefully treat them with more compassion and understanding.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia, the Association estimates that could triple by 2050.\u003cbr/\u003eData presented at an Alzheimer's Association conference last year showed the programs are increasing medical students' knowledge of the disease beyond what they learn in the classroom.\u003cbr/\u003eWinship says: \"I'm so fond of Jared because we talk together, we talk the same language, he is a very good student, he's learning and learning, learning and that means everything to me.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 75 percent of Northwestern students who participate become doctors in fields that deal with Alzheimer's patients.\u003cbr/\u003eWorthington has a particular interest in Alzheimer's and other dementias as his grandmother also has the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"It's something scary and difficult but just because you have Alzheimer's doesn't mean that, you know, your life is over. You can still contribute and give back and participate meaningfully, and, you know, it's been great kind of seeing how I'm able to do that with Dan.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWinship's wife Jean is a great supporter of the scheme.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"We were thrilled to find the buddy program. , first of all. I found it online on Northwestern's web site, and literally it was like a light bulb going off. I was like, 'Dan, this is the perfect thing for you to get involved in.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJean Winship is keen that future doctors are better trained to help patients like her husband.\u003cbr/\u003eHis diagnosis last year was a cruel blow after long medical career including professorships at some of America's top medical schools.\u003cbr/\u003eJean Winship adds: \"Everyone in the Buddy Program is very committed to understanding that people at this stage of any kind of dementia still need to live and enjoy life and so it's not about just having the disease it's about just learning to live with the disease. It's just sort of a part of who Dan is. I mean, it's something he has, it's not, it's not Dan, it's just a disease that he has.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhenever possible Worthington joins Winship for his consultantations with neurosurgeons and other doctors at Northwestern University.\u003cbr/\u003eWinship is very positive about his shared meetings with his 'pupil' and they have weekly luncheons.\u003cbr/\u003eAssociate Professor Darby Morhardt is the founder of the Buddy Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"A lot of our students come in thinking of it as something that affects someone pretty devastatingly, or they're in the last stages of the illness and unable to speak or really to have a relationship with someone, and what this program has done has really changed the perception of Alzheimer's disease.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWinship hopes the program will one day enable a new generation of doctors to find new treatments so future patients have a chance to avoid the disease, but for as long as he is able, he is happy to pass time with his special pupil. \u003cbr/\u003eChicago, US, February  6, 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
