She went on to become their youngest principal ballerina. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom there she became one of the most gifted ballerinas of the century both in her classic roles and in new roles created specially for her. Fonteyn's legendary partnership with Rudolf Nureyev, which began in 1962 at a point when she might have considered retirement, revitalised her career, extending it for almost another 20 years. Her contribution to English ballet was officially recognised when she was appointed D.B.E in 1956, and in 1979 the Royal Ballet granted the rare title of prima Ballerina Assoluta. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sale at Christie's celebrates some of her greatest roles. \u003cbr/\u003eFonteyn first danced the role of Odette in Le Lac des Cygnes in 1935 at the age of just 16. The sale includes a selection of photographs from the original and later productions of Swan Lake (estimate £800-1200) and her tutus from the 1952 production where Fonteyn played both the white swan Odette, and the black swan Odile. (estimated at £3,000 - 5,000) each.\u003cbr/\u003ePossibly the most important dress in the sale, in terms of her career, is the Rose Adagio pink silk tutu woven with gole lame and lavish embroidery. Estimated to sell for £3,000 to £ 5000,  Fonteyn wore the dress for the Sadlers Wells production of The Sleeping Beauty which she took to New York, establishing herself as an international star. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso included in the sale is the ivory chiffon ballet costume from Daphnis and Chloe (£1,500 - 2,500), the aquamarine chiffon high waisted sleeveless dress from Ondine (£3,000 - 4,000) and the alluring costumes from the three act Romeo and Juliet performed with Nureyev at the Royal Opera House in 1965. The audience response to the premiere resulted in a record 43 curtain calls and the peach chiffon sleeveless dress and it's lime green counterpart are estimated to fetch around £2,500-3,500 each.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the 25-lot personal costume section of the sale is her Christian Dior wedding outfit, worn on the occasion of her wedding to Dr. Roberto (Tito) Arias, on 6 February 1955 (£5,000-7,000). The personal section also includes the exquisite Dior evening dress of Champagne coloured satin, dating from 1955, worn by Fonteyn in the official photographs taken when she received her D.B.E award in 1956 (£1,500 - 2,000).\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection also features a selection of photographs of the wedding which took place in the panamanian Consulate in Paris, and the reception, held later in a
