death.\u003cbr/\u003eKnown as Casa Bunuel, the Spanish government bought and renovated the house to preserve the filmmaker's legacy. \u003cbr/\u003e\"As a well-deserved tribute, the Spanish Embassy in Mexico, the Spanish Cinematography Institute with support from the Film Library of UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) decided to stage a tribute along with his (referring to Bunuel) collaborators and closest friends.\" said Mario Barro, film co-ordinator at the university.\u003cbr/\u003eBunuel lived in the three-storey brick house for the last 30 years of his life following his exile from Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eHe moved to Mexico City in the 1950's and resided at the house until his death in 1983. \u003cbr/\u003eBunuel said he hardly ever left his house and liked living secluded from the world because of his deafness. \u003cbr/\u003eVisitors get to learn about Bunuel through historical photographs and film posters on display throughout the house.\u003cbr/\u003eSome show Bunuel on the set of his films. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are even authentic film reel canisters on display.\u003cbr/\u003eA family of Spanish origin donated the piano that belonged to Bunuel and was loved by his French wife Jeanne Rucar. \u003cbr/\u003eThe piano had been given away 50 years earlier in exchange for three bottles of champagne.\u003cbr/\u003eBarro says Bunuel was upset at Rucar for playing the piano. \u003cbr/\u003e\"One day, in a drinking binge he came up with the idea of giving away the piano to the first person who gave him a box of champagne bottles,\" Barro said. \u003cbr/\u003eCritics still regard Bunuel as one of the greatest directors of the 20th Century. \u003cbr/\u003eMovies such as \"L'Age d'Or\" and \"That Obscure Object of Desire,\" set milestones for cinema. \u003cbr/\u003eHollywood contemporaries, including Alfred Hitchcock and George Cukor, admired his freedom and creativity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish artist is also a source of pride for Mexicans.\u003cbr/\u003eBunuel made 20 of his 32 movies once he had settled in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eSpanish authorities say Casa Bunuel will eventually house film students and scholars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plan is for Bunuel's home to be the meeting point between Spanish and Mexican movie-makers, through workshops and occasional exhibits that celebrate Hispanic
