Various of Photoglobe, so-called \"World's largest Photoglobe - an ocean of images at Photokina 2012\"\u003cbr/\u003eMaking video on digital SLR cameras and shooting photos on a smartphone are the two major trends at this year's Photokina imaging expo.\u003cbr/\u003ePhotokina is one of the world's largest photography trade fairs, it takes place in Cologne, Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eSmile for the camera.\u003cbr/\u003eYou can't get away from the lens and the flash at Photokina, one of the world's largest photography expos.\u003cbr/\u003eFew pictures are as instant as this from the new Fujifilm Instax.\u003cbr/\u003eMobile phone photography has become so important it even gets a special exhibition space on the show floor, for the first time at Photokina.\u003cbr/\u003eSmartphone manufacturers, network suppliers and app producers are presenting their latest products on the \"Koelnmesse\" fair grounds in the western city of Cologne, among them the photo industry's major players like Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji.\u003cbr/\u003eSmartphones with camera and video functions are increasingly enriching the photography and imaging sector and are largely responsible for the tremendous increase in the number of image-capturing devices in use today.\u003cbr/\u003eLargely driven by the success of the iPhone, photography with smartphones is widely regarded as important segment of the photography industry.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts believe that worldwide around 700 million smartphones will be sold in 2012, according to information released on the official homepage of the Imaging Association (Photoindustrie-Verband e.V.).\u003cbr/\u003eThese days, every third mobile phone sold in Europe is a smartphone. And of course, lots of pictures are taken with these devices. In the USA, the portion of pictures that were taken with smartphones grew from 17 per cent to 27 per cent in 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eChristian Mueller-Rieker is executive director of the German Imaging Association (Photoindustrie-Verband e.V.), he believes the photography market is so buoyant because so many people have smartphones.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The photographic industry is doing very, very well. There have never been that many photos being taken with those devices, be it with smartphones or be it with a camera technology. So, in the end these are all evidences that speak for a booming market.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, more people taking photos on smartphones is not necessarily bad news for makers of specialised compact or DSLR cameras according to statistics from Photoindustrie-Verband.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At first we are certainly thankful as due to the wide exposure and penetration of smartphones a lot more photos are, of course, being generated. So it means there are actually growing buyer groups for the camera market,\" says Mueller-Rieker.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2010, there were over 500,000 user searches for photo-apps in Germany, and around 963 million apps were loaded onto mobile phones in 2011, according facts provided by the Imaging Association.\u003cbr/\u003eThe biggest advantage of the smartphone or tablet over the traditional camera is its native internet connectivity. This is their main appeal, according to Mueller-Rieker.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And we do certainly also see those devices as aid devices, those smartphones and tablets. Because it is very often the connecting device to the internet as we are also talking about the issue of networking and wireless connectivity. And a big path is currently still going from the camera via smartphone or tablet via a wireless connection to the internet. But as I have said before, according to our point of view, it is a pure gain for the industry. And we do not think, as some people say, that the devices are a threat for each other on the market,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mobile phone companies are learning fast, and the camera in the new Samsung Galaxy is particularly sophisticated but even the firm's marketing manager admits they've still got a long way to go before they catch the compacts.\u003cbr/\u003eFor this reason Samsung launched a special Galaxy camera, to accompany the smartphone and tablet.\u003cbr/\u003eAndreas Wahlich, Senior Manager Marketing at Samsung says: \"The image quality of smartphones is definitely not as good as the one from compact cameras or compact system cameras. That is one of the reasons why we brought the galaxy camera to the market, because this is the best combination of high-end technology about smartphones and the real quality of a compact camera and bring both worlds together.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Galaxy camera has 3G connectivity and runs Android apps - just like a smartphone.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has a much greater zoom range than a traditional smartphone camera and can even shoot slow motion video at 120 frames per second.\u003cbr/\u003eSamsung produces one of the world's best-selling smartphones - but even Samsung is convinced the mobile will never replace the camera.\u003cbr/\u003e\"No, we do not think this at all, because the size of the sensor is the key element for real good image quality. And that is the reason why within our latest technology or latest products you see big size sensors. And although big images and pictures taken by smartphones are taken on occasion, so that means just for documenting anything or on really let's say up-to-date features. Wahlich.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on display was the so-called \"World's largest Photoglobe - an ocean of images at Photokina 2012\". \u003cbr/\u003eThe globe has a diameter of six meters, with the \"ocean of images\" consisting of more than 30,000 photographs on 400 square meters. \u003cbr/\u003eAll photographs were sent by users to the German Imaging Association.\u003cbr/\u003ePhotokina is held every two years in Cologne, Germany, and it brings together industry, trade, professional users and end consumers with a passion for photography.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, a total of 1,158 exhibitors from 41 countries and more than 180,000 visitors from 165 countries are expected on the fair grounds.\u003cbr/\u003ePhotokina runs from 18 - 23 September,
