Ears and paws are being painted in pale pinks and soft yellows, while decorative motifs have been stencilled onto backs, with colourful...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eHundreds of pampered pets in Los Angeles are marking the Easter holidays daubed in spring colours. \u003cbr/\u003eEars and paws are being painted in pale pinks and soft yellows, while decorative motifs have been stencilled onto backs, with colourful feathers fixed into place to mark the occasion.      \u003cbr/\u003e\"Creative grooming\" is all the rage in Los Angeles where many pet owners take their fury friends to be chalked, painted, stencilled and feathered.\u003cbr/\u003eThe groomers say coordinating seasonal looks with sweeps of temporary colour and accents is a creative way to show off the personality of both  pet and owner.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Pet Smart in Hollywood,  'Pet Expressions' is now offering stencilling, feathering and chalking as add-ons to its grooming department services.\u003cbr/\u003eTamara Nicole, an actress from Los Angeles and pet parent to a Maltese/Poodle mix called 'Zoe Maria' had her dog chalked after being told about the new service from her groomer.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I was a little taken back at first when they did it the first time but when I came back a second time for Halloween, it was just awesome!\" she says.  \u003cbr/\u003eGroomers say the trend today is to shower pets with the same treatments available to humans.\u003cbr/\u003eChalk stencilling for animals replicates tattooing for humans. It is done with a pet-safe temporary colour sprayed onto shorter fur in fun shapes such as stars, hearts and paw prints. \u003cbr/\u003ePet chalking is compared to highlighting the hair.  Groomers say they use a colourful non-toxic product that has a similar composition to standard chalk that can easily be washed out of pet fur.\u003cbr/\u003eFeather extensions are fixed into the dog's fur to withstand brushing or bathing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe beauty industry for dogs is unregulated so there is often concern that chemicals used in dyes might hurt the animals, but Spencer Sahagun, Pet Smart district manager for Orange County, California says their products are completely non-toxic.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have a chalking service that would allow you to add colour to your pet designed with ingredients that are food-safe so if a pet were to ingest those, there would be no issue with that. They are stencilling with spray-on colouring that we can add to a pet that is also made with food-grade ingredients, so it's safe.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAll applications end with a non-toxic sealer that acts as a kind of hair spray. Pet Smart provides a \"Look Great Guarantee\" where owners do not have to pay for the makeover unless they are happy with the results.\u003cbr/\u003eBirthdays are the most popular occasion.\u003cbr/\u003eSports team colours are also in big demand.\u003cbr/\u003eJames Tabb, a project manager from Los Angeles has brought his one-year old dog Parker in for the first time to try creative grooming.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Dogs have personalities and it helps bring them out. Parker is a little spunky so we got a little feather on him today, kind of like a little rock star. You can do it a million different ways. If you had a favourite sports team or if you are just really enthusiastic about something you could do a little chalking. It's really just a fun way to express your personality,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the American College of Veterinary Behaviourists, playful grooming of a pet is almost always for the benefit of the owner and if there is no pain and it's fun for the pet and pet owner then it approves.\u003cbr/\u003eThe International Association of Pet Fashion Professionals is a Chicago based organisation created to educate pet fashion professionals worldwide. Founder, Lauren Darr says that increasingly owners are treating their pets like human babies. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Families are getting smaller. Couples are choosing not to have children so the pets are becoming the babies of the family. Then you also have the social media factor. Social media coupled with isolation creates a lot of people in today's society wanting attention. They are craving attention. As a result of that and needing that eye to eye communication with people, overall, people become parents of pets and that in turn gives them that bond and that connection that they're seeking.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDarr believes creative grooming it a direct result of a narcissistic society where people post about every part of their life on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram to get attention. She says pets are a way for some people to show off. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are all curious people. We like to see things that are cute and that are funny or even extreme by some peoples barometers and so we go online and we look at You Tube videos and there is a reason that cat videos are so popular on You Tube. That is kind of feeding this fascination with pet fashion because pet fashion can be anything from a practical sweater that you put on a pet in a cold environment when they have little or no hair all the way up to really these lavish designs that are in doggie pageants. For me personally it's really about that closer bond and connection that you get with your pet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eChalking costs $6 to $15 for ears, tails, paws or other areas. It costs $2 for a streak. The chalk lasts for between one to 6 days but starts to fade after day one. The colour is easily washed out. A bath is recommended to completely remove the colouring from light coloured dogs.\u003cbr/\u003eStencilling costs $4 for one stencil, $6 for two and $8 for three. Groomers say they last one to six days or come out with a bath.\u003cbr/\u003eFeathering cost $10 for one feather, $18 for two.
