I was transferred to Villavicencio (The capital of Meta province and then to Bogota (The capital of Colombia) and unfortunately doctors had to amputate my leg,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eEach variety of coral snake produces a different kind of poison and it would take 33 classes of specific antidotes to heal all patients attacked by coral snakes.\u003cbr/\u003eThis helps explains the high cost of antivenom serum, and the low reserves in the hospitals. \u003cbr/\u003eJavier Jacobo, a doctor of a hospital in the township of Restrepo explains their position. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, some days ago we had a case of snakebite and we used the only two vials of antivenom serum. Right now we have a case of snakebite and we have the patient in observation because there is no antivenom serum to give to the patient,\" \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to (INS) Colombia''s National Health Institute, the country boasts 447 species of snakes, of which approximately 47 are poisonous. \u003cbr/\u003eRicardo Rodriguez, a snake expert, is collecting snake venom from which to make antivenom. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Sometimes we find wounded snakes because there are people who hit them with sticks and machetes. There are cases where we just take their venom when they are still alive and in the cases where they are not alive, we take the venom also when we can to collect and take them to the labs in Bogota to be analyse and then make the antivenom serum,\" \u003cbr/\u003eThere are only two laboratories in the country able to produce such an antidote, Probiol S.A and Colombia�s National Health Institute. So extra antivenom serum has to be imported from Mexico and Brazil.\u003cbr/\u003eHorses are injected with a small amount of snake venom to provoke their body''s immune system into creating antibodies. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce horses develop an immunity to the snake venom their blood can be used to make antivenom for humans.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as Alberto Gomez, a veterinarian, explains there are not enough resources in Colombia to keep up with demand. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Right now we have about 40 animals in production (referring to horses to be injected with venom) which gives us a limited production of the product because to be able to cover the country''s demand we would need a double number of animals, in this case 80 animals,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe production of antivenom serum is very complex because of the difficulty of finding and maintaining the snakes in captivity, and the high variability of their venoms.\u003cbr/\u003eThe (INS) says that in the country snake bites are a problem of public health especially in rural areas where venomous snakes are common. \u003cbr/\u003eMartha Lucia Gomez, a biologist and director of Probiol S.A laboratory says that the antivenom only works if it is administered quickly. \u003cbr/\u003e\"�Regarding the numbers of people bitten by snakes, statistics show that there are about 4,000 to 5,000 cases reported every years however, there is a large undercount of people who can not go to the hospital because they live in isolated areas and most of the time die because the medicine isn''t injected on time.
