They decided not to take rejection lying down. In conjunction with other filmmakers - many of whom they had met at that year's Independent Feature Film Market - they established an alternative to Sundance to run concurrently, which they called Slamdance 1995: Anarchy in Utah. Following a front page article in Variety, the team quickly asembled an impressive roster of over 20 films, including a dozen features, half of which were world premieres. All of the films were made by first-time directors, had unknown casts and an aggregate budget of under 1 million dollars. The Festival has survived and this January enjoyed its fourth anniversary.
Slamdance's programming team of over 30 (primarily Slamdance alumni) selected just over 60 features and shorts for the '99 Festival from January 23-30, 1999. The feature competition was limited to first-time directors of films without U.S. distribution or sizable budgets. In addition to the short films screening in competition, the organisers also showed a comprehensive selection of shorts as free screenings in their Filmmakers' Lounge. All screenings were held in two screening rooms at the Treasure Mountain Inn (TMI).
This year's Slamdance Jurors were SAM L. GROGG, the Dean of the American Film Institute, JACQUI LOUEZ, who is heavily involved in indie production in Australia, SKIZZ CYZYK, a Baltimore based filmmaker (LITTLE CASTLES, 4 FILMS IN 5 MINUTES), RICHARD WECHSLER a recipient of The New York Film Critics Award and an Academy Award - Best Picture Nomination - for producing FIVE EASY PIECES staring Jack Nicholson, HOLLY WILLIS, a Los Angeles-based film journalist, critic and scholar.
and JUNICHI MIMURA a revered screenwriter/director/producer in Japan.
Since its inception, Slamdance has come to be recognized as "The ultra independent film festival" (Sam Rubin, "Good Morning America") and Variety's Len Klady recently made the comparison to Cannes by referring to Slamdance as "the unofficial Directors Fortnight to Sundance." The festival has also attracted the support of such critics as Roger Ebert. Maintaining its grassroots style into its fifth year, Slamdance is a festival by filmmakers, for filmmakers, and is dedicated to promoting new talent. The festival has been involved with such critically acclaimed first features as Greg Mottola's THE DAYTRIPPERS, produced by Slamdance supporter, Steven Soderbergh; Daniel J. Harris' THE BIBLE & GUN CLUB; and Michael Davis' EIGHT DAYS A WEEK (which starred FELICITY's Kerri Russell. In 1996, the festival held tributes to Robert Altman and Roger Corman. In 1997 Slamdance hosted an IFC sponsored premiere of independent film guru John Pierson's television show "Split Screen." At the 1998 festival, 20 DATES by Myles Berkowitz received the Audience Award, as well as a distribution deal with Fox Searchlight. SIX-STRING SAMURAI won two awards (for cinematography and editing) and was picked up by Palm Pictures. Grand Jury winner Kevin DiNovis' SURRENDER DOROTHY has since gone on to 23 international film festivals, including winning the top prizes at both the Chicago and New York Underground Film Festivals.
This year's Slamdance Film Festival awards went to the following films and filmmakers:
GRAND JURY AWARD FOR BEST FEATURE: CHI GIRL, Written/Directed/Produced by Heidi Van Lier.
GRAND JURY AWARD FOR BEST SHORT: "Billy's Balloon" Directed by Don Hertzfeldt
AUDIENCE FEATURE AWARD: MAN OF THE CENTURY, Directed by Adam Abraham. Kerri Russell, star of Slamdance '97 Audience Award winning film EIGHT DAYS A WEEK (slated for release by Legacy Releasing this Spring) won a Golden Globe Award last week for her performance on "Felicity." LeAnn Rimes, who has a cameo in the Slamdance competition feature DILL SCALLION, appeared following the Thursday morning screening and treated the audience to an a capella version of "Amazing Grace."
According to Chris Gore's new book The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, "Slamdance has become THE festival to watch for the next big thing."
CHI GIRL, the winning film is directed by Los Angeles screenwriter, HEIDI VAN LIER, who, realizing she had nothing witty or interesting to say whatsoever, decided to make a movie.
A voyeuristic film, it folows a filmmaker, following a girl he's met in a bar. She has a foolish theory: any woman can pick up any guy and get him to come home with her, because men are... stupid. She agrees to prove it to him, and he agrees to film it. In the course of filming we realize that no one's jumping at her offer. Furthermore, we realize that she never has anywhere to go, or anyone to see, despite her obsessive claims to the contrary. The filmmaker realizes that this peculiar subject is far more interesting than their little bet, and so he keeps filming, waiting for the truth to spill.
All the extras were unsuspecting pedestrians. You can tell that's the case in many instances since they only had one take for each shot. Once, a guy yelled that he was going to call 911 and ran off. They cut, ran after the guy, and he asked us which festivals they had entered. Also, none of the actors had a script. They just read their lines when they arrived on set."
Another of the films screening in competition was MAN OF THE CENTURY, directed by ADAM ABRAHAM, which picked up the audience award . It tells the story of a sharp- witted, fast-talking, young journalist living in present day Manhattan, is inexplicably convinced he's living in the 1920s. Johnny Twennies' old-fashioned ethics prevent him from fulfilling the physical needs of his girlfriend. As Johnny fails to comprehend the media-saturated, multicultural world that we take for granted, the film subtly shifts gears as the modern world is gradually transformed into a zany farce typical of 1920s "talkies."
An epic journey for the end of the millennium, AMERIKAN PASSPORT chronicles 23- year-old Reed Paget's incredible, shoestring odyssey around the world. Seeking adventure, Paget finds himself dodging tanks in Tiananmen Square, ambushing the US ambassador in Panama, stumbling into a shootout in South Africa, embracing romance in Berlin, infiltrating the Red Army in Moscow, and running for his life as scud missiles crash into Tel Aviv. Through it all, Paget addresses the complex morality of the Cold War, and contrasts the ritual of human sacrifice with the culture of war. Unbelievable, ironic, funny and, most of all, true. He picked up a documentary award for his efforts.
Of his efforts to make the film he said, during the making of AMERIKAN PASSPORT, I smuggled film out of China, was jailed in Cambodia, got Dengue fever in Nicaragua and was broke for eight years.
Sex, drugs, and righteous sounds are on full display in the raucous docu-drama THREE DAYS, brought to the screen by the upstanding citizens of Jane's Addiction. Messrs. Farrel, Navarro, Perkins and Flea (re)joined forces for their infamous 1997 "I-Itz M'My Party" Relapse Tour in which a meld of "oldies," unreleased songs, and solo works are served up in a swirly orgiastic stew. The film deftly integrates documentary and narrative footage (Cinque Lee as the bumbling videographer) shot in whatever format was handy. It's an unprecedented work of devoted exploration, and a tremendous portrait that revives the nearly dormant genre of Rock 'n' Roll cinema.
The film was made by CARTER SMITH who has directed music videos for Jane's Addiction, Fishbone, D.S.A., and other bands. He is also an accomplished photographer of fashion, live music and landscapes. KEVON FORD has directed music videos for Guru, Prince Paul, and Don Piper. He has also shot several docs.
"The first stage of filming began, basically, as a secret to the band.
