This came just hours ahead of talks in Belarus that are...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eHeavy shelling resounded on the outskirts of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol on Friday as Russian-backed separatists pressed their offensive in the strategically key southeast. \u003cbr/\u003eThis came just hours ahead of talks in Belarus that are widely hoped to bring a ceasefire.\u003cbr/\u003eThe strategic city of about 500,000 lies along the Sea of Azov, between Russia to the east and the Russia-annexed Crimean Peninsula to the west.\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of fighters including members of a pro-Ukrainian battalion called Azov gathered near the eastern entrance of the city, heavily armed and on high alert. \u003cbr/\u003eFighters stopped all cars that passed through the area to check them. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also checked the mobile phones of those inside the cars. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sound of incoming and outgoing shelling from different directions appeared to indicate that pro-Russia fighters have partially surrounded the area and are probing its defences. \u003cbr/\u003eThe onslaught could be intended to raise the pressure on the Ukrainian government ahead of peace talks. \u003cbr/\u003eSeizure of Mariupol would give the separatist forces a strong foothold and raise the threat of the rebels carving a land corridor between Russia and Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Russia annexed in March. \u003cbr/\u003eIf that happens, Ukraine would lose another chunk of sea coast and access to rich hydrocarbon resources that the Sea of Azov is believed to hold.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If we lose it (Mariupol), then we could lose the entire coastline, the whole of the south of Ukraine,\" said government adviser Tatyana Chornovil, who is serving in the Azov Battalion. \u003cbr/\u003e\"After Mariupol, it will be the turn of Mykolaiv, Odessa and Transnistria.
