Many of those soldiers would normally be battling insurgents or holding territory they had already cleared.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, militants exploiting the flooding chaos clashed with police overnight, authorities said on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe northwest, where the floods hit first, is the epicentre of Pakistan's fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban, and attacks by militants late Tuesday and overnight highlighted the threat they still pose.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pakistani Taliban have urged citizens to reject any foreign aid, saying it will only be stolen by the political elite in the impoverished nation of 175 (m) million.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations appealed last week for 459 (m) million US dollars in international aid for immediate relief to Pakistan. \u003cbr/\u003eAid groups have complained that the response so far has been anaemic, but a UN spokesman Giuliano announced on Wednesday that more than half of the money, 54.5 percent, had come in. \u003cbr/\u003eAboard US amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu, the US Council General in Karachi, William Martin, said more US helicopters would be used to deliver aid. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Currently, American military air craft from this very vessel are supporting flight operations, flood relief operations, carrying food and shelter throughout Pakistan. Other American aircraft are bringing relief supplies, day in and day out into Pakistan,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eAdmiral Sinclair Harris, meanwhile, said that the scale of the crisis in Pakistan makes the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the US \"pale in comparison.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"The devastation is horrible,\" Harris said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This one, in terms of scale, the number of people, and the amount of area that is affected, it makes it pale in comparison.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe US has provided more than 90 (m) million (US) dollars in support since the flooding began July 29, according to a Pentagon spokesman.\u003cbr/\u003eUS aircraft have rescued more than 5,500 people and delivered more than 500,000 pounds of relief supplies, the spokesman added.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Pakistan's top meteorologist, the floods are headed towards major cities. \u003cbr/\u003ePakistan senior meteorologist Arif Mahmood said existing river torrents were still heading to Hyderabad and Sukkur in the south and could yet cause more floods. But he said there were no heavy rains forecast this week. \u003cbr/\u003eThe floods that began three weeks ago have submerged tens of thousands of villages, killed around 1,500 people and affected 20 (m) million others, authorities say. \u003cbr/\u003eThe floods hit first in the northwest, wiping out much of its infrastructure, and then the bloated rivers gushed toward the south and the east,
