We're the closest Jewish community to Plymouth Rock and where Thanksgiving happened, so it's awesome to see so many people in the New England community embracing this opportunity to celebrate in some ways the Jewish American experience, the immigrant experience, the way religious freedom makes America great,\" says Gitell. \u003cbr/\u003eGitell has partnered with Atlanta-based company \"Modern Tribe\" to create a line of merchandise to mark \"Thanskgivukkah,\" including tee-shirts. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the proceeds are going to charity. \u003cbr/\u003e \"The most popular item is our Woodstock inspired design. It's a Thanksgivukkah t-shirt that's based on the original Woodstock t-shirt design back from 1969,\" says Jennie Rivlin Roberts, President of ModernTribe.com.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Another one is the American Gothic painting. Ours we call American Gothikkah because we've turned the painting into a Hanukkah and Thanksgiving inspired mash-up,\" she continues. \u003cbr/\u003eThe joint celebrations are also giving people the chance to create a mash-up meal - adding a dash of Jewish tradition to the traditional Thanksgiving menu. \u003cbr/\u003eJewish cookbook author Tina Wasserman is among those embracing the culinary challenge. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Thanksgiving is probably the one holiday that you could put another carbohydrate on the table and nobody would notice,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eWasserman has laid out a range of dishes, including latkes. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Here's the Ethiopian sweet potato carrot latkes, using Ethiopian flavours. I'm not saying that Ethiopian Jews made latkes, they probably didn't. But it was taking our culture and our tradition and tweaking it and also making it very modern because I used flax seed or tiff as a filler instead of matzoh meal or flour,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eWasserman explains that sweet potato pumpkin cazuela is another possible menu pleaser.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says it's a \"riff on the sweet potato casserole.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is an old Caribbean recipe uses coconut milk, brown sugar, spices. It's wonderful, it's smooth, it's very easy to make and Jews had a presence in the Caribbean.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWasserman is also showing off a relish which has apples, pears, cranberries and grand marnier among its ingredients. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The fact that it has orange juice and orange zest in it, and orange liquor, is really going back to the Jews and the orange trade and their significance in spreading the use of oranges and lemons throughout Europe,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe lunisolar nature of the Jewish calendar makes Hanukkah and other religious observances appear to drift slightly from year to year when compared to the US, or Gregorian, calendar. \u003cbr/\u003eJewish practice calls for the first candle of the eight-day Hanukkah to be lit the night before Thanksgiving Day this year, so technically \"Thanksgivukkah\" falls on the \"second candle\" night.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television \u003cbr/\u003eNorwood, Massachusetts - 29 October 2013 \u003cbr/\u003e1.
