campaign fund-raising abuses threatened Attorney General Janet Reno with contempt of congress on Tuesday if she did not turn over confidential memos.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was a highly partisan and politically charged meeting of the Government Reform and Oversight Committee.  \u003cbr/\u003eTop Justice Department officials were the focus of questions about two memos that officials have said recommend Attorney General Janet Reno seek an independent counsel in the ongoing probe of 1996 campaign fund raising. \u003cbr/\u003eThe panel's chairman, Republican Dan Burton, has threatened to bring contempt-of Congress charges against Reno for refusing to hand over the memos. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's also critical of Reno's refusal to name an independent prosecutor in the matter. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the documents in question is a November 1997 memo from F-B-I Director Louis Freeh, in which he is said to have called for an independent counsel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe other was submitted last month by Charles LaBella, formerly head of the Justice Department campaign finance task force. \u003cbr/\u003eReno rejected Freeh's request last autumn but she still is considering LaBella's advice.\u003cbr/\u003ePressed on the status of the probe and the body of evidence, Freeh agreed with Burton that he would still recommend that Reno name the independent counsel.
