year to complete the extradition process from Chile. \u003cbr/\u003ePeruvian Justice Minister Alejandro Tudela said, \"we are only a few steps away from being able to start extradition procedures for the fugitive Alberto Fujimori.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlberto Fujimori has been living in exile in Japan since he abandoned his presidency in 2000 and was arrested when he made a surprise appearance in Chile earlier this month. \u003cbr/\u003eWithin hours of his visit, Chilean officials arrested him and today he remains detained, awaiting extradition to Peru.\u003cbr/\u003eHe faces more than a dozen criminal charges involving murder, kidnapping, crimes against humanity, arms smuggling, corruption and siphoning public funds.\u003cbr/\u003eChilean lawyer Alfredo Etcheverry will be representing Peru during the extradition trials in Santiago. \u003cbr/\u003eEtcheverry arrived in Lima on Wednesday to meet with Peruvian authorites and to discuss possible legal strategies in order to move extradition procedures forward.\u003cbr/\u003eFujimori, an agricultural engineer born of Japanese parents, escaped Peru in 2000, when the corruption scandal first surfaced in Peru. \u003cbr/\u003ePeru then made several unsuccessful attempts to extradite Fujimori from Japan. \u003cbr/\u003eThroughout his ten year presidency, Fujimori was surrounded by controversy.\u003cbr/\u003eTo his supporters, Alberto Fujimori was the president who saved Peru from the twin evils of terrorism and economic collapse.\u003cbr/\u003eTo his opponents, he was an authoritarian figure who rode roughshod over the country's
