Wide shot street\u003cbr/\u003eLast month, nearly 100 women turned out to register to run for office in Friday's Iranian presidential elections, but all their bids for candidacy were turned down by the the Guardian Council, continuing a trend established since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe hard-line Guardian Council is a constitutional watchdog that supervises the elections. It is an unelected group which can bar candidates on religious grounds. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year the Council barred two thousand candidates in parliamentary elections, many of whom were women.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen are barred from running on the basis of a controversial interpretation of the constitution by the Guardian Council. \u003cbr/\u003eThe constitution says the president must be elected from among political \"rijal\" - an Arabic word that means literally \"men\" but can be interpreted simply as political personalities regardless of their gender. (Many Arabic words have been incorporated into Persian or Farsi.)\u003cbr/\u003eOver the years many female politicians - including Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi's human rights group - have tried to change this article of the constitution, claiming that the Guardian Council doesn't interpret the phrasing clearly.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen are allowed to hold other political offices, so to some women, being banned from running for the presidency doesn't seem justified.\u003cbr/\u003eSome political parties, such as the National Freedom Party - which is not considered a legal party by the Guardian Council - want the Council removed altogether. They say that as long as the Guardian Council exists, women will never be able to run.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, some experts believe that even if the Council allowed women to run for president, most wouldn't be taken seriously. They say women don't have the experience required for the position and would get the country into difficulties.\u003cbr/\u003eRafat Bayat, a parliamentary representative from Zanjan province, disagrees. She says women have proven themselves in the last 26 years by holding political positions and so the presidential role should also be available to them.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother candidate hopeful, Zahra Eshraghi, said that although the constitution says women aren't allowed to run, she would like to change that.\u003cbr/\u003eEshraghi, the granddaughter of the late Revolutionary Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, and wife of the current president's brother, is one of the government's harshest critics.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in a country where women still have fewer rights in divorce, inheritance and child custody cases, it's difficult to predict when - if ever - they may get their day on the presidential campaign
