Having rented it at first, they decided to buy it. They really fell in love with this property. They had it done up - especially the gardens. They brought over the (British) landscape architect Russell Page for the occasion. Various exteriors of Le Moulin de la Tuilerie \u003cbr/\u003eFancy a romantic week-end in a French hideaway that belonged to a glamorous couple?\u003cbr/\u003eHow about stepping into the retreat of a former British King who abdicated to marry a US socialite?\u003cbr/\u003eLe Moulin de la Tuilerie, a stone mill house tucked in a sleepy hollow half an hour away from Paris, is now open for the public.\u003cbr/\u003eA chance to relive history and to step into the world of the Windsors.  \u003cbr/\u003eA British building preservation charity, The Landmark Trust, is offering tourists week long stays in this French mill so redolent of history.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter World War II, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor settled in Paris, but kept a weekend and holiday retreat in the countryside. \u003cbr/\u003eThe house used to belong to French painter Etienne Drian before it changed hands and became part of British history. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1936, a constitutional crisis in the British Empire and Dominions was caused by King-Emperor Edward VIII's proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American socialite.\u003cbr/\u003eThe marriage was opposed by the King's government as Mrs Simpson was perceived to be an unsuitable consort and it was widely assumed by the establishment that she was driven by love of money or position rather than love for the King. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the opposition, Edward declared that he loved Mrs Simpson and intended to marry her whether the government approved or not. \u003cbr/\u003eHe abdicated in December 1936, and he married Mrs Simpson the following year. \u003cbr/\u003eThey remained married until his death 35 years later.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom Friday 25th March 2011 tourists can rent the French hideaway they enjoyed. \u003cbr/\u003eJoanna Reece, operations coordinator of the British charity, says people love rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous - even if it is only their ghosts.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well they would come here at weekends really to get away from the formality of their life in Paris. So they had everything renovated at huge expense and Wallis decided to rename Le Moulin calling it Le Moulin de la Tuilerie.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLocal resident Ginette David was born in the Moulin Aubert as it was then called and her father was head gardener. \u003cbr/\u003eShe tells us that her father would stroll around the estate with the Duke and he was always trailing a string of weeny dogs.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Windsors never had children, but they loved dogs - especially pugs.  \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral of the dogs grave headstones were found at the Moulin and are now on display.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact the Duke was keen to create an English garden in France he would be seen digging and planting himself.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe summer garden looks as it if could be in England - complete with gladioli.  \u003cbr/\u003eLocal Resident Ginette David says that the Duchess would bring flowering pots in plants so that her guests always had something seasonal.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There were lots of flowers - but when the Duchess had guests it was always in bloom.
