And a very serious bite. So the local folks got the idea that they needed to have fewer snakes around because they were even found sunning on the green on the golf course. So they undertook a program where they were trying to reduce the numbers of snakes in Evans County.  That motivation has long since passed.\"\u003cbr/\u003e9. It's like anything else, anytime you have to deal with wildlife, people that really enjoy being outdoors, as far as fishing, hunting, that kind of stuff. You got people here that snake hunt. Wide shot of crowd\u003cbr/\u003eThe small town of Claxton, Georgia was one of several communities in the southern United States to host a \"rattlesnake roundup\" this weekend. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was the 39th year of the event, which typically attracts more than 15-thousand people. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year, there were 100 rattlesnakes secured in wooden pens with wire mesh for people to view.\u003cbr/\u003eThe snakes can garner premium prices - 5 US dollars (euro4.20) per pound for the first 2-thousand pounds (900 kilograms) of the poisonous reptiles.\u003cbr/\u003eKenneth Darnell, a laboratory researcher from Alabama, showed the crowd how venom is extracted from the reptiles, as he clutched one of the slithering creatures in his hands.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe explained how the festival originated when a local boy was bitten by an Eastern Diamond Back Rattlesnake and nearly died. Residents decided to round the snakes annually to bring down their numbers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival has since evolved into a family outing with vendors and amusement park rides over the years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Humane Society of the United States believes rattlesnake roundups are cruel, ecologically disruptive and that methods used to collect the snakes are inhumane.\u003cbr/\u003eSome collectors pump gasoline or propane fumes into snake dens to get the reptiles to come out. \u003cbr/\u003eSome use mirrors to reflect sunlight into the dens, and the snakes, using their heat-sensing exterior glands, pickup on the temperature rise and come out hoping to dine on a passing
