Only politics was left and I salute all Pakistani transgender (people), not because I have entered the field of politics but they also entered the field of politics. And they (transgender people) have filed nominations from different constituencies in different parts of the country," said Rana.
Rana has always been active in her community, and works at an organisation that helps promote the rights of transgender people as well as street children and other social issues.
But after a Supreme Court ruling in 2011 allowed members of the transgender community to get national identity cards recognising them as a separate identity - neither male or female - and allowing them to vote, she decided to run for office as well.
Rana is vying for a provincial assembly seat.
"People ask if we will win or lose in the elections. But I won when my nomination papers were submitted," she said.
The Supreme Court's decision did not explicitly say that transgender people could run for office but by getting identity cards and the right to vote, the road was opened for them to also stand for elections.
Before the court's decision, transgender people could get an identity card but only if they identified themselves as a man.
Transgender often refers to people who present themselves to the world in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth.
In Pakistan, that usually means men who dress in feminine clothes and wear makeup.
Male and female roles are clearly defined in Pakistan, a conservative and deeply religious country.
Transgender people often face harassment and abuse, even from their own families.
Running for office - and the possibility of actually serving in office - is a way to highlight the role of transgender people in Pakistan, said many of the candidates.
Most say they want to cut unemployment, address the country's widespread poverty and electricity blackouts and loosen the grip of Pakistan's ruling parties on the political process.
Most of the candidates have few financial resources and are relying mostly on door to door campaigning and word of mouth to drum up votes.
All are independents.
On April 26th a bomb exploded near the office of one of Pakistan's main political parties, killing nine people in the latest attack in the run-up to May's parliamentary election.
Police officer Zafar Bukhari said the bomb was planted on a motorbike near the Awami National Party office. Nine people, including four children, were killed and 24 other people were wounded, he said.
As the election approaches, militant groups have increasingly been attacking liberal, secular parties such as the one targeted Friday in the port city of Karachi.
Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to The Associated Press from an undisclosed location.
The onslaught has forced many of the parties to change their campaign strategy and has raised questions about whether the vote can be considered valid if some mainstream parties cannot properly take part.
"It is not yet clear whether the bomb was planted or if it was a suicide attack," said Asif Eijaz, a senior police officer with the Karachi police.
The injured were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed hospital where eyewitness Muslim Khan cursed the perpetrators.
"Ambulances did not come on time. speech shortly after his election, Sharif vowed to fix the country's ailing economy and end electricity blackouts while also calling for an end to American drone strikes in the tribal areas.
Nawaz Sharif was elected to an unprecedented third term as the prime minister of the country of 180 (m) million people by an electorate frustrated with corruption, inflation and unemployment and looking to him for quickly needed solutions.
He must also navigate a tricky relationship with the US, which has angered many Pakistanis by using unmanned aerial vehicles to kill militants who hide in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.
Following June 5th's ceremony Sharif inspected a guard of honour.
Sharif's win was a comeback for the 63-year-old politician - after his 1999 ouster, he spent nearly eight years in exile, mostly in Saudi Arabia, and five years in the opposition before regaining the prime minister's office.
His assumption of office marks a turning point for the country - the first time a democratically elected government has handed over power to another in the country's 65-year
