Various of police identifying suspects from a line\u003cbr/\u003eKenya's human rights commission combed through a forest near Nairobi after receiving allegations that police may have killed suspected gangsters and hidden their bodies in the woods.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government-appointed group was acting on information provided by two men who said they were picked up by police who threatened to kill them and dump their bodies in a hole in Karura Forest. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth men have links to Mungiki, a secretive gang accused in a string of beheadings in the capital Nairobi.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We know that there have been a lot of extrajudicial executions and we know that there has been a wave of terror. Therefore upon receipt of such information we need to get to the bottom of it,\" said Hassan Omar Hassan, commissioner of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.\u003cbr/\u003eThe commission team of about 12 people searched parts of the forest on Thursday for freshly dug-up ground, but found nothing suspicious. \u003cbr/\u003eAlexander Kangethe Njai, one of the men who testified before the commission, said he was picked up last month by several officers who knew he was a Mungiki member.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was then brought to Karura Forest on the outskirts of Nairobi where he claims the police put him in a hole and told him that they would kill him.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They tied me this way and told me they would beat me. When they were coming towards me a dove passed between us when they were now on this side and I was now facing this direction.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Sociology Professor Ken Ouko, an expert in deviant behaviour at Nairobi University, both the Mungiki group and the police use \"terror\" tactics.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What has happened is that the Mungiki being a quasi-terrorist group have adopted the route, they have taken the path of offensive terrorism where you cause fear by doing very markable things like bombing a whole building or beheading somebody,\" Ouko said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The police on the other hand, are representing repressed terrorism on behalf of the government where you instil fear not just in the organisation you are trying to suppress but in the other people who live in those neighbourhoods,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eOn June 7 police and paramilitary forces raided Mathare, a slum in the heart of Nairobi where thousands of residents where forced out of their homes. \u003cbr/\u003eMany were forced to lie down, others were apparently beaten, and some it was reported, were allegedly killed by the police or beheaded by the Mungiki. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Alfred Mutua, Kenya's top government spokesman, defended the police's methods in the raid.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We found some of the women with guns, hiding guns you know. Babies with their diapers, we find a pistol inside the napkin of the baby. So we are dealing with serious issues here,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice have faced criticism for their Mungiki operations, with residents saying police have indiscriminately rounded up people, demolished their homes and beat them.\u003cbr/\u003eMungiki claims to have thousands of adherents, all drawn from the Kikuyu, Kenya's largest ethnic group. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group, whose name means \"multitude\" in the Kikuyu language, was inspired by the bloody Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s against British colonial rule. \u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, it has been linked to extortion, murder and political violence.\u003cbr/\u003eSince April over 120 people have been killed in this cycle of violence which appears to be intensifying ahead of elections scheduled at the end of this year.  \u003cbr/\u003eMany Kikuyu families are caught up in the violence. that produce homemade alcohol or provide electricity to slum areas by re-routing the circuits.\u003cbr/\u003eMungiki members have threatened to disrupt the elections in December, when President Mwai Kibaki will seek a second term. \u003cbr/\u003eLeaflets circulated by the group have called on Kenyan youths to join up and prepare for an uprising against the
