General early morning shot of street \u003cbr/\u003ePortuguese/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil awoke on Monday to the not-unexpected news that the country's current president had won his bid for re-election.\u003cbr/\u003eWith 28.9 million votes, or 27 percent of the total counted, Cardoso had 51.3 percent and former labor leader Luiz Inacio \"Lula\" da Silva of the Workers Party had polled 33.9 percent.   \u003cbr/\u003e67-year-old Cardoso was the overwhelming favourite throughout the campaign, getting a boost from voters' fear of the deepening economic crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil is the latest country threatened by an impending global recession following economic crises in Japan and Russia.\u003cbr/\u003eReaction in Brazil on Monday morning was mixed following Sunday's election victory for President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the one hand, the outcome was no surprise.\u003cbr/\u003eCardoso, a 67-year-old sociologist, was the overwhelming favorite in Sunday's national elections, getting a boost from voters' fear of a deepening economic crisis.   \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well I think that what happened was the logical thing, that Fernando Henrique was ahead in the polls all the time. He is an experienced candidate. I believe that since the last election he has improved the country's situation. People could buy more and many had more money in their pockets with the stabilization of the economy. I wanted a change. People were saying (Lula) did not have a lot of experience, but I thought it was still worth trying.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Josenilda Maria da Silva, cleaner\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was the campaign for change that sealed Lula and the Worker's Party's fate.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil faces a financial crisis partly due to fallout from Russia and Japan's recent economic turmoil.\u003cbr/\u003eMillions of dollars of capital flowed out of the country in the last few weeks as nervous international investors reacted to the global economic crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eBrazil's finance Minister Pedro Malan is heading negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and other public and private lenders, for an emergency loan package reportedly worth 30 billion dollars (U-S).\u003cbr/\u003eBut Brazil will no doubt have to impose some sort of internal austerity programme to prevent its currency from having to be devalued.\u003cbr/\u003eSome believe that it was the inevitability of harsh measures to contain the crisis failed to persuade voters to change the man at the helm.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers point to the fact that Lula was Cardoso's only real opposition candidate, and that it was lack of electoral choice that forced people to vote for Cardoso.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Portuguese)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The lack of option is always there. I think if there had been another opposition candidate ... They cast a safety vote. That's my opinion. It's not that Fernando Henrique is the best candidate. I don't think the situation is  very good but I think the people were scared that with Lula things would get worse and that is why they voted for Fernando Henrique -Cardoso.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER
