Wide of commercial district\u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia's buildings are going green.\u003cbr/\u003eA green rating system launched later this year is set to encourage construction companies and residents to turn their homes into eco-friendly units.\u003cbr/\u003eIt looks like a regular shopping mall, but underneath the surface looms the latest green technology.\u003cbr/\u003eThe building has a sewage treatment plant that can recycle water for gardening and floor cleaning, making it even good enough for drinking.\u003cbr/\u003eThe compound also has a highly efficient water cooler for its air conditioning.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mall's management is working on additional green steps in its premises such as installing LED light bulbs and movement sensors on elevators.\u003cbr/\u003eEngineering manager Febry Eddy says that being green can be good for business as it reduces operating costs at the same time. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In a business sense, we design and operate our building efficiently to manage the operating costs. Therefore our consumption of fuel and electricity adheres to a green building concept,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Plaza Indonesia mall is one of many buildings in Jakarta to go green.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a modern world's capital, Jakarta is well known for its skyscrapers, symbols of growth in this rising Asian economy. \u003cbr/\u003eBut these massive structures also consume a lot of energy and produce waste that can be harmful to the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe recent concern over global warming has added pressure to encourage a green lifestyle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe non-profit organisation Green Building Council Indonesia has put together a green rating system to determine whether new or existing buildings are deemed environmental-friendly. \u003cbr/\u003eBuilding owners can get a range of certification from bronze to platinum, after a thorough inspection by council experts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe council is made up of experts from various fields such as architecture, landscape, interior design, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as representatives from property developers, manufacturers and energy producers.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the key criteria for the certification are land use, energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management and indoor air quality.\u003cbr/\u003eDirector of rating and technology at the council, Rana Yusuf Nasir, says he believes the main goal for the rating system is to encourage buildings that use less natural resources.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Green buildings aim to reduce the use of natural resources such as energy, water and raw material like wood and lessen the environmental impact such as waste and the proper use of land, as well as creating a healthy and comfortable indoor area,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rating system for buildings is due to be launched later this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe concept of green buildings is not new to some housing developers.\u003cbr/\u003eBuyers are catching up with the idea of green living. \u003cbr/\u003eThis property developer in South Jakarta has been selling the concept of ECOmmunity as green lifestyle since 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eECOmmunity has three main features- Health Care, Earth Care and Energy Care. \u003cbr/\u003eAll of them promote green housing and green living for residents.\u003cbr/\u003eThis latest housing cluster is a showcase of the developer's green initiatives.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has a roof garden to minimize air pollution and provide a lower temperature. \u003cbr/\u003eAn indoor pond, right next to the dining table, is creating humidity and lowers the room temperature. \u003cbr/\u003eThe houses in the cluster also use environmental-friendly paint, light steel roof frames and biotech septic tanks. \u003cbr/\u003eMarketing manager Antasena Perkasa is confident that his property will be certified green by any rating system for buildings.\u003cbr/\u003ePerkasa says the main challenge for developers is to convince costumers to dig deeper into their pockets to get a green house.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The consumer has to make a trade off when buying an environmental-friendly house by paying a higher price for it. But we always tell people that, despite of the initial high cost of a green house, they will benefit in the long term with a better quality of living than if they had lived in a conventional house,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Indonesian government is paying close attention to green initiatives in the country.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono recently declared that the country's aim is to reduce emission of greenhouse gases by more than 20 percent in the near future. \u003cbr/\u003eTo support this, the Ministry of the Environment released a decree on green housing last January. \u003cbr/\u003eDeputy minister Sudariyono says that everyone must work together to promote green buildings and make the country more eco-friendly. \u003cbr/\u003eHe supports a green rating system for buildings and works with the private sector to establish the green criteria and certification process.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The green rating promotes the urgency of doing something right now. It is not enough just to inform people about it, we must also unite local and central governments, private sectors and the general public to encourage developing environmental-friendly buildings,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile the Green Building Council Indonesia says they are receiving a positive response from the public.\u003cbr/\u003eOffers for pilot projects are streaming in every week, ranging from government offices, commercial offices, apartments, hospitals and many others.\u003cbr/\u003eRana says green rating systems for buildings in other countries have proved that a green building can save energy up to 30 percent and produce less waste.\u003cbr/\u003eThis fact gives a big boost to what the council is trying to do in Indonesia.\u003cbr/\u003eRana says that green buildings are not just a trend, but will reshape the way people plan, build and maintain buildings in the future.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The concept of a green building is not only concerned with aspects of engineering and technology. It is bigger than that. This concept is not just a trend that will go away one day. It is a change and a transformation of how we plan, build, operate and maintain buildings,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe council hopes that the green rating system will eventually become a part of building codes in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce that is in place, the ultimate goal of carbon-free buildings and saving the planet will be a step closer to
