Once the victim clicked on the link, they would be brought to a fraudulent page operated by the phishers or alleged criminals, that was made to appear like a legitimate bank.  As you can see, this just one example of hundreds of variations of the scheme, the site looks very legitimate. A link would then direct the victim to a page where they would be asked to provide personal identification information. Thousands of victims responded to the fraudulent solicitation enabling the subjects in Romania to share banking information and personal ID information with their US Counterparts in order for the US subjects re-encoded debit cards using any given card with a magnetic strip.\"\u003cbr/\u003e7. personal information from unsuspecting Internet users as part of a global crime ring.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Romanian-based phishing scams sought to rip off thousands of consumers and hundreds of financial institutions, according to indictments unsealed in Los Angeles and New Haven, Conneticut.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US attorney investigating the case Thomas O'Brien said his team had uncovered an international ring comprising \"33 defendants, including citizens of Romania, Canada, Pakistan, Portugal and the United States.\"\u003cbr/\u003eO'Brien said the gang had \"obtained personal credit Canada, Portugal and Pakistan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cases were linked by two Romanians who participated in both schemes, authorities said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Los Angeles, 33 people faced 65 counts on a bevy of charges, including racketeering, bank fraud and identity theft.\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors say phishers based in Romania snagged information about thousands of credit and debit card accounts and other personal data from people who answered spam e-mail. \u003cbr/\u003eThe data was then sent to the US and encoded on magnetic cards that could be used to withdraw money from bank accounts.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week, one encoder in the scam, identified only as Seuong Wook Lee, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Los Angeles to racketeering conspiracy, bank fraud, access device fraud and unauthorised access of a protected computer.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, in Connecticut, seven Romanians allegedly spammed consumers with directions to visit a hacked-in Web site posing as at least a half-dozen legitimate bank sites, including Citibank, Wells Fargo and PayPal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe seven Romanians, including two also involved in the Los Angeles scheme, were indicted in January in charges that were unsealed only last week.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of them, Ovidiu-Ionut Nicola-Roman, was arrested in Bulgaria last summer and extradited to the United States in
