You couldn't even see downtown from here. But thanks to God this year we can see a blue sky to some extent,\" says Tehran resident, Mostafa Kenbritchi. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The rain and wind have had a positive impact on the weather, but I think the petrol that they (the government) have been distributing lately has reduced the level of pollution,\" says Abbas Barghi, another local resident. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Department of Environment (DOE), Iranians consume some 70 million litres (18.49 million gallons) of petrol per day, a tenth of which is estimated to come from imports because of Iran's lack of refining capacity.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the US tightened sanctions on petrol exports to Iran in June 2010, the government of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad started producing gasoline at six petrochemical plants under an emergency plan. \u003cbr/\u003eBut according to an official DOE statement from the Hassan Rouhani administration that took office last August, the fuel produced by those petrochemical firms contained benzene, toluene, and three xylene isomers that are known to be carcinogenic.\u003cbr/\u003eIn February this year, Iran's oil ministry announced it had stopped the distribution of petrochemical fuel in major cities.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the past years, there was no clear standard for the petrol distributed in the country. The petrol had Euro 1 and Euro 2 standards. But now in the three major cities of Tehran, Karaj and Arak, Euro 4 petrol is being distributed,\" says Saeed Motasaddi, DOE deputy for Human Environment.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"The gasoline made by petrochemical firms had 2 to 10 percent of benzene which is two to ten times more than the minimum allowed by Euro 4 standard.
