Wide of herbalist pouring medicine in pharmacy\u003cbr/\u003e22.SOUNDBITE: (English), Beatriz Linhares, Herbalist\u003cbr/\u003e\"Conventional medicine tends to work at alleviating the symptoms, that means what discomfort the patient is getting whether it's pain, whether it's inflammations, infections, but it's not aimed at looking at the actual cause of the problem, we tend to go beyond that, what's causing the headaches, what's causing the eczema for example, we don't focus on the actual symptom, we go beyond that.\" \u003cbr/\u003e23.Various of herbalist labelling bottles\u003cbr/\u003eHomeopathy has never been so popular in the United Kingdom.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sale of over the counter remedies now totals around forty million pounds ($59 million US) and, according to market research analysts Mintel, are used by fifteen per cent of the population.\u003cbr/\u003eDecades ago, its use by a minority of patients was regarded as eccentric.\u003cbr/\u003eNow its growing consumption and the cash it attracts has put it under greater scrutiny. \u003cbr/\u003ePatient Susan Chinn is in her seventies and has just undergone a hip replacement operation. She is now suffering what she believes is temporary discomfort from the surgery. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this is not her medical doctor's surgery and the remedy she's seeks is a homeopathic, not a conventional one. \u003cbr/\u003eHomeopathy is a relative newcomer compared with most complementary medicines. It's established on principals set out by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann.\u003cbr/\u003eHe believed that 'like can cure like', or that an illness can be cured by a heavily diluted substance which can produce the same symptoms.\u003cbr/\u003eChinn's homeopath, Jeanette Thomson, uses the example of a bee sting. \u003cbr/\u003eTo treat it Thomson says homeopathic medicine would be made out of the bee sting itself  which is then diluted many times so that none of the original substance is left in. She says what is at work here is physics and not chemistry. \u003cbr/\u003eShe argues, using this analogy, that the bee sting itself is regarded as chemistry while homeopathic medicine, which is the bee sting many times diluted and shaken, is physics.\u003cbr/\u003eMany scientists remain sceptical for several reasons. One of the main disputes is the question of whether a substance can still have healing effects if it is diluted to the point where it ceases to be. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also argue that although the physical state of the diluted and shaken substance has changed, that doesn't mean it becomes efficacious. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Edzard Ernst from the University of Exerter has spent more than a decade examining the results of clinical trials of all complementary medicines. He says \u003cbr/\u003eit's absolutely true that studies exist showing that the physics of water can be altered by the dilution process of homeopaths. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he says other evidence fails to confirm this and he argues that even if it is accepted that the water has changed in this way, there is nothing to show how changed water can affect our health.\u003cbr/\u003eErnst agrees that in studies, some patients with specific illnesses such as Parkinson's disease, do appear to benefit from homeopathy, but he argues that it has not yet been proved that it is any more than a placebo effect, which is where the patient's belief in a therapy, or substance has a therapeutic effect.\u003cbr/\u003eNonetheless, the number of patients seeking homeopathic remedies shows little sign of decreasing, and the disagreements between the scientists and the homeopaths have not stopped the growth of homeopathic shops and clinics which have sprung up on high streets across the UK. \u003cbr/\u003ePatient Susan Chin says she was always open to the idea of homeopathy because her mother used it when she was a child. \u003cbr/\u003eChinn says all that stopped when penicillin came with it's miraculous results, but then her daughter, who was a baby at the time, became prone kidney infections.\u003cbr/\u003eChinn decided to try homeopathy on her daughter and she claims it worked in the first session.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Thomson her patients tend to be children with their colds, flus (influenza) and coughs, and older people with their muscular aches and pains. She says they come to see her about things that you can't get a hospital result from because the X-rays and blood tests are clear. \u003cbr/\u003eThomson says there's nowhere for the patient to go so they seek homeopathic help. \u003cbr/\u003eBut she insists she always checks whether a patient has had medical tests, or seen a GP before she prescribes, to ensure serious diseases don't go undetected.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to consumer researchers Mintel the homeopathic market has grown by fifty per cent in the last four years.\u003cbr/\u003eBeatriz Linhares, a herbalist, practices in the same clinic. Unlike homeopaths she relies on whole plants to provide remedies. \u003cbr/\u003eHumans have taken extracts from plants for their mind altering, healing and intoxicating properties since ancient times and ingredients in many plants provide the origins for drugs that are used today.  \u003cbr/\u003eLinhares says the effects of plants can be powerful, and it is essential for a herbalist to ensure they are aware of all the conventional and complementary treatments their patient is consuming before they make a prescription. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso, because herbal medicine can have such strong effects, it is of even greater importance that the patient is able to verify that the herbalist is fully trained and qualified. \u003cbr/\u003eLinhares says each plant is a fantastic collection of active ingredients, each one working on different parts of the body, and cites camomile as an example. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says in addition to its essential oils it also has ingredients which will work on other parts of the body, some of which are relaxing, some which are antibacterial and others are anti-allergic.\u003cbr/\u003eLinhares argues that conventional medicine is too focussed with alleviating a patient's symptoms, whether it's pain, or an infection, whereas herbalists look at the cause of a problem. \u003cbr/\u003eFor example: by finding out the actual cause of headaches or eczema.\u003cbr/\u003eThat, obviously, would be hotly denied by medical practitioners, concerned over the possibility that their patient's symptoms could point to diabetes, cancer or other diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eSome medical doctors themselves have begun to open the door to complementary therapists by referring patients\u003cbr/\u003eBut unlike medical doctors, the homeopaths themselves, as with many other complementary medicines, are not licensed or regulated. \u003cbr/\u003eSo concerned is the UK government about the unlicensed growth of complementary medicines, that it set up a steering committee to investigate how this sector can be regulated.\u003cbr/\u003eThe committee on the Statutory Regulation of Practitioners of Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Other Traditional Systems Practiced in the UK has highlighted a number of problems.\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to regulate a system, all, or a majority of practitioners need to become members of, and accept the rules and guidelines of, one professional body.\u003cbr/\u003eYet in the United Kingdom there are numerous bodies representing practitioners in each field, many with different criteria for membership. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Committee acknowledges that in the UK it is usual to provide a body of evidence that a therapy works before imposing regulation. But it says that, \"in the interest of public safety,\u003cbr/\u003estatutory regulation should now proceed with all possible speed\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe increasing use of complementary medicine in the UK has been echoed across Europe. Market researchers claim there has been a sixty per cent growth in the homeopathic market in Europe between 1995 to 2005; from 590million euros ($829 million US)  to 930 million euros ($1.3 billion US), with France and Germany consuming the most.
