People marching in Lima, asking for their right to medicines and treatment\u003cbr/\u003ePeru's Ministry of Health, now under the administration of President Alejandro Toledo, is trying to make sure the Andean nation implements measures to detect, control and prevent HIV and AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in order to treat the disease effectively they need studies to show just how many people are infected; and that seems to be a problem.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficially, there are between 70 and 120 thousand infected individuals in Peru, but the numbers, many argue, do not show the reality.\u003cbr/\u003eLaws do exist in Peru to facilitate detection, treatment and prevention of HIV, but so far the rules have not been implemented and or enforced.\u003cbr/\u003ePROSA is a non-gubernamental organization trying to help victims by gathering the statistics needed to fight the illness more effectively.\u003cbr/\u003ePROSA is also advocating governmental subsidies to help patients pay for the many drugs they need. \u003cbr/\u003eCurrently, a patient pays about US DOLLARS 450 for medication and treatment, which is too expensive for most patients to afford.\u003cbr/\u003ePROSA also says that preliminary statistics show that the increase in cases is mostly in women and children.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the time being, the government, various NGOs and the private sector are teaming up and trying their best to educate people about the dangers of AIDS and HIV.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the disease was first reported two decades ago, an estimated 40 million people worldwide are now HIV positive, 28.1 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa, according to figures released by the United Nations this week. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UN predicts that AIDS will kill up
